Sadio Mane's gesture explained as he points to sky after scoring vs Crystal Palace

Sadio Mane lived up to his heartfelt promise to a Liverpool fan as he pointed to the sky during the Reds' emphatic 7-0 victory at Crystal Palace.

Mane grabbed a goal and an assist before he was substituted for Mohamed Salah in the 57th minute at Selhurst Park.

When he scored in the first half, Mane kissed his finger and pointed to the sky, just as food bank volunteer and Liverpool fan Lee Swan had shown him on a video call in late November.

While the Senegalese was later visibly unhappy to be withdrawn from the action, his celebration was met with acclaim from fans when they remembered the promise he made to Lee.

The 28-year-old has often copied his teammates' celebrations and on this occasion allowed Lee to pick his next one.

On a video call, Mane said: "You know me, I like to copy celebrations. If you have any celebrations, show me now."

In response, Lee kissed his finger and pointed to the sky and said: "For my granddad".

Mane, who practiced the celebration in the video on Liverpool's official website, performed it to a tee on a triumphant Saturday afternoon for the Reds.

Lee volunteers to help The Florence Institute community centre deliver 1,000 hot meals and 350 special food hampers in the build-up to Christmas.

He was whisked away for a tour of Anfield with colleague Timo and scored a goal in front of the Kop, to which Mane joked: "You shoot much better than Robbo [Andy Robertson]. Much, much better than Robbo."

Mane signed off the call with his and Lee's celebration and said: "I'm proud to be part of Dear Liverpool FC and to be part of making a difference during these challenging times. And it is an honour to help recognise the work that Lee, Timo and the Florrie have been doing.

"Giving Lee the tour was a highlight of lockdown. He is a real character and it was a pleasure to help him realise his dream of scoring at Anfield."
