Sadio Mane opens up on 'lucky' red card and Thiago debut as Liverpool lay down marker at Chelsea

Sadio Mane says Andreas Christensen's 'lucky' first-half red card was the key turning point in Liverpool's impressive win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Christensen was given his marching orders just before the break after hauling down the Senegalese forward, who looked to be clean through on goal.

Mane would go on to net two goals in four second-half minutes as the champions took control in West London, and the 28-year old admits the incident was a pivotal moment.

“Obviously, it was a tough game, especially the first-half," he told Sky Sports after the game.

"We found it very difficult to create chances.

"When they got a red card, it made it easier and in the second-half we created a lot of chances and we scored two goals. We deserved to win.

“At that moment, the only choice he (Henderson) had was to put the ball in and he’s very good at it, so I tried to make the runs but when he made the foul, I knew it was a red card. After the referee gave him the red card, it was lucky for us."

As well as making it six points from six, the win at Stamford Bridge gave Liverpool fans the chance to catch a first glimpse of Thiago Alcantara, who came on for an impressive debut at half-time.

Despite only playing 45 minutes, the Spaniard made more successful passes than any other Chelsea player over the course of the game, and Mane says there is likely to be more to come over the next few weeks.

“I think everyone knows what he’s capable of doing," he added.

"He’s one of the best players in the world, so we’re very lucky to have him.”
