Sadio Mane and Idrissa Gueye suffer Africa Cup of Nations heartbreak as Senegal lose final

Sadio Mane and Idrissa Gueye's Africa Cup of Nations campaign ended in heartbreak as Senegal lost to Algeria in the final.

The Lions of Teranga had been hoping to win the tournament for the first time in their history, but Baghdad Bounedjah's heavily-deflected early strike saw them end up on the losing side in Cairo.

Senegal dominated proceedings from start to finish, boasting 62% of possession, while they had a second half penalty decision overruled by VAR after Adlene Guedioura had initially been deemed to handle Ismaila Sarr's cross.

However, they were unable to make the breakthrough as Algeria ran out winners despite registering just one shot during the entire match.

Defeat finally brought an end to Mane and Gueye 's respective 2018/19 seasons, with both players now due to link up with Liverpool and Everton next month following breaks after international duty.
