Sadio Mane and Diogo Jota injury update provided by Jurgen Klopp after Liverpool loss

Jurgen Klopp gave an injury update on Sadio Mane and Diogo Jota after Liverpool's defeat to Brighton piled on the pressure ahead of a huge clash with Manchester City.

The Reds host City on Sunday with Pep Guardiola's side seven points ahead of the champions following their win over Burnley on Wednesday.

Liverpool later blew their chance to keep up the chase on their rivals when they suffered a shock 1-0 loss to Brighton thanks to Steven Alzate's winner.

Klopp's side missed the pace and movement of Sadio Mane as the forward continues to recover from injury, with his team-mates looking bereft of ideas and confidence in his absence.

Liverpool had fired three goals past both West Ham and Tottenham in their previous two games going into Wednesday's clash.

But their performance against Brighton was more reminiscent of their four-game spell without a goal just after Christmas.

Klopp's side have missed Diogo Jota's goals since he was sidelined by a knee injury in early December - and the manager was asked about both his injured forwards following Wednesday's defeat.

"Did I say that before the game? It hasn't changed," said Klopp. "Diogo, couple of weeks? Two, three, four?

"Sadio might be available. He didn't train with the team."

Jota looks set to miss games against Leicester, Everton and RB Leipzig as well as Sunday's City showdown.

And while Klopp appeared hopeful he would Mane to back to face Guardiola's side, Reds fans won't breathe easier until the Senegal forward returns to training.

Klopp admitted his fatigued team were not good enough to beat Brighton on the night - and demanded a higher level of performance against City.

Asked about the seven-point gap to City, who have a game in hand, Klopp said: "These gaps are not interesting at the moment. They are the result of the results we had already.

"What we can influence is the next game. Tonight it was not enough. We know that and we have to change that."
