Sadie Sink’s smash Broadway hit is getting a film adaptation!

The play that has captivated Broadway this season has been John Proctor Is the Villain. And if you didn’t have the chance to catch it on Broadway (there is still time), you have one more big chance: A film adaptation!

The play, which was written by Kimberly Belflower, takes place in a small town in Georgia. Shelby (played originally by Sadie Sink) is a young girl who slept with her best friend’s boyfriend and her friends think she skipped town because of it. Throughout the piece, we learn what really happened, explore the themes of The Crucible, and ultimately embrace the importance of girlhood and friendship. It is emotionally charged and a play that I left sobbed and haven’t been the same since.

So to have a film adaptation heading our way is exciting! Belflower is set to write it with Tina Fey and Marc Platt serving as producers on the film. Sink will executive produce and there is no word yet on whether or not she will star. But the film will be released by Universal.

“If I owe you a text or email or literally anything else I hope you’ll understand that my head and heart are backlogged with things that have happened in the last six months that I haven’t even begun to process, this being the most recent example ahahahahahahahahaha ??,” Belflower wrote on Instagram. “Anyway can’t wait to make a movie (??!?!!!) with my heroes ???!!!!!!”

John Proctor Is the Villain truly just feels like female rage and acceptance and joy all rolled into one show and getting to share that with the world, after the play comes to an end on Broadway at the end of August, excites me. I cannot wait for others to enjoy this story as much as I have and I can’t wait to see who will bring our cast of witches to life!
