Saddlebag test will tell if it's time to get rid of your pillows and buy new ones

After a long, hard day at work, nothing beats getting into bed and snuggling up.

But if you're not feeling as comfortable in bed as you would like and are finding your neck hurting the next morning, it turns out your pillow could be to blame.

As with many other household items, pillows need to be replaced and the general rule of thumb is to get new ones every few years.

This is because over time they flatten, causing them to become less supportive of your head and neck.

If you're not sure if it's time to get rid of your current pillows and treat yourself to some new ones, it turns out there are two very easy and quick ways to check.

Experts from Tielle Love Luxury's pillow swap programme have explained to Femail that all you need to do is try either the 'saddlebag test' or the 'press test'.

And while those may sound odd, they're actually very simple and will take you virtually no time at all to complete.

So how do you do it?

For the saddlebag test, you begin by laying your pillow over your arm.

If you can fold the pillow in half over your arm, like a saddlebag, then your pillow is past its prime and it's time to get a new one.

If you cant easily fold the pillow, it's still got plenty of life left in it.

The other test, the press test, is also very straightforward.

To find out if your pillow is up to scratch, place it on a firm surface, such as the floor or a tabletop and simply press down on the middle of the pillow.

If it 'lofts' back into shape when you remove your hand, then it's still good to sleep on.

However, if it remains flat you really need to get rid of it.

The experts also revealed what kind of pillow you should purchase, depending on the position you prefer to sleep in.

Those who like to sleep on their back should go for a soft pillow as it won't put too much stress on the neck.

Meanwhile, those who sleep on their side need a firmer, higher pillow, in order to keep their neck aligned with their spine.

And if you switch it up while you sleep and move around into different positions, it's recommended you buy a medium height pillow - to give you the support you need when on your side, but also on your back, as it won't throw your neck too far forward when you're lying flat.
