'Sad day for the city' as Dublin's Chapters Bookstore closes its doors for good

Today is a sad day for Dublin book lovers as the iconic Chapters Bookstore is closing its doors for good.

The business opened 40 years ago and has become a core part of Dublin's book scene.

Chapters is Ireland's largest independent books shop and first opened on Wicklow Street in 1983.

Since then, it moved to St Stephens Green, Henry Street and Abbey Street, until it opened at its current location on Parnell Street.

Last October, the bookstore announced they would permanently close in the coming months.

Today will be their last day of business and they are open from 9:30am to 5pm.

Customers have been flooding in to purchase books from Chapters for the final time.

Dubliners expressed their sadness as they shopped in the shop this afternoon.
One man told Dublin Live: "It's a great place to come and browse around, we'll miss it"
Another Dublin shopper said: "It's awful, it's a real loss for the area. It's such a pity."

The business thanked the public for their support on social media.

They wrote: "What an incredible weekend, we are bowled over by all the love you have shown us. Our amazing team are ready to do it all again one last time tomorrow, doors will be open from 9.30am-5pm."

People took to social media to express their sadness at today's closure.

One said: "Was in yesterday. Sad to see the shelves so empty but amazing to see so many people there. Thanks for everything. Sad day for the city."

Another wrote: "End of an era. I'm feeling very sad and I wish all the team the very best for the future."
