Sad day for Dublin as famous Christy's Hospital shop on James Street to close its doors after decades of service

It's certainly the end of an era for Dubliners as an iconic south Dublin shop is set to close its doors after decades of services.

Heartbroken locals and good-wishers rushed to social media to pay their tributes to Christy's Hospital shop which will shut its doors for good this weekend.

The tiny store on Mary Aitkenhead House in James Street will be open for the last time on Saturday as owner Christy Egan retires.

The Liberties Dublin Facebook page were extremely sad to hear about the news saying that "the shop has been dishing out the quarters of bonbons and 10p bags of fizzy cola bottles for decades".

They added: "The best of luck to Christy Egan in his retirement."

Dubliners were quick to share their favourite memories of the famous shop while also wishing Christy well ahead of the closure.

Another said: "Aw so sad to see Christy go. I think I speak for everyone of the area when I say he's like family to most, the best of luck Christy you will be missed."

A third commented: "Such a sad day in Dublin 8. Some lovely memories of that man. If you were good in mass you would get a treat. The very best of luck in your next chapter, Christy."

One person even had fond memories of the store despite being barred out of it for most of his childhood.

He said: "Ah Christy, you will be missed. I got barred when I was 4 for robbing a bottle of milk and smashing it for fun and was only allowed in with my grandad after that. Such great memories, enjoy your retirement best of luck."

One person said: "Very best of luck in your future Christy. I'd say you could tell many a story about all the generations of kids that wrecked your head trough the years. Including myself enjoy your retirement Christy well deserved."
