SINGLETON'S popular home of traditional music, Sacred Spaces Ministry, is closing due to "unsustainable" maintenance costs.
On Tuesday the Institute of Sisters of Mercy of Australia and Papua New Guinea, who have operated Sacred Spaces from their convent since 1995, announced all tours, concerts, weddings or venue hire would cease from September 1.
"Unfortunately, after much deliberation, the level of funding per annum required to subsidise Sacred Spaces to enable the ministry to continue, as well as to maintain the building and site is financially unsustainable now and into the future," the Sisters of Mercy said in a statement.
The venue has been closed since the outbreak of COVID-19, but it was hoped it would reopen for a Hunter Wind Ensemble concert on Sunday.
Other upcoming shows including Friends In Stitches (August 30) and String Loaded (August 30) have also been cancelled.
Prior to COVID-19 Sacred Spaces regularly played host to a diverse range of music, which included classical, choral, jazz, ragtime, traditional folk, flamenco and gypsy.
