Sacré bleu! New study reveals that Edinburgh's set to be as hot as Paris by 2050

A study has found that 80% of cities will experience disastrous global warming in the next three decades - with Edinburgh expected to be as warm as Paris by 2050.

Although this may sound like a dream come true for some we wouldn't start celebrating - the report comes with a warning that the change could come with severe drought.

The study, carried out by scientists at Crowther Lab, Zurish, suggests summers and winters in Europe will get warmer, with average increases of 3.5C and 4.7C respectively.

The most dramatic results from the study show that cities in northern latitudes, such as Edinburgh, will resemble climates of cities over 1000km to their south by 2050.

Edinburgh's climate will resemble that of Paris, London will match today's Barcelona and Glasgow will match temperatures in Cardiff.

London could experience the same type of extreme drought that Barcelona faced in 2008 - the Spanish city had to import 22 million euros worth of drinking water.

Lead author of the research paper, Jean-Francois Bastin, said: "History has repeatedly shown us that data and facts alone do not inspire humans to change their beliefs or actions.

"The intangible nature of reporting on climate change fails to adequately convey the urgency of the issue - for example, it is hard to envision how 2C of warming, or changes in average temperature by 2100 might impact daily life.

"With this analysis from Crowther Lab scientists, we want to help people visualise the impact of climate change in their own city, within their lifetime."
