US police said they were hunting at least two gunmen who carried out a mass shooting that left six dead and 12 wounded in Sacramento.

Police Chief Kathy Lester pleaded with the public to share videos and other evidence that could lead to the killers who opened fire in the centre of California state capital at around 2am of Sunday.

“The scale of violence that just happened in our city is unprecedented during my 27 years here,” Ms Lester, said. “We are shocked and heartbroken by this tragedy.”

The gunfire erupted just after a fight broke out on a street packed with restaurants and bars but police said they did not know if the altercation was connected to the shooting.

DeVasia Turner

The first victims have been named as Sergio Harris, 38, and DeVasia Turner, 29.

Mr Harris’s mother said her daughter called her shortly after the shooting to say he had been shot and killed outside a nightclub.

“She said he was dead. I just collapsed,” she said.

Video from witnesses posted on social media showed rapid gunfire for at least 45 seconds as people screamed and ran for cover.

President Joe Biden called for tougher gun laws in the wake of massacre which was the second mass shooting in the city in the last five weeks.

“Today, America once again mourns for another community devastated by gun violence,” Mr Biden said in a statement. “But we must do more than mourn; we must act.”

“Ban ghost guns. Require background checks for all gun sales. Ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. Repeal gun manufacturers’ immunity from liability”, he said.
