SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Kings general manager Monte McNair took care of some bookkeeping Friday, exercising the team’s third-year option on guard Tyrese Haliburton for the 2022-23 NBA season.
Haliburton is entering his second season with the Kings after coming out of Iowa State as the No. 12 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. The decision to pick up Haliburton’s option comes as no surprise following a stellar rookie campaign.
Haliburton was an NBA All-Rookie First Team selection after averaging 13.0 points, 5.3 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 1.3 steals last season. He ranked second among rookies in assists and steals. He was third among rookies in scoring and 3-point shooting (.409).
Haliburton was named Western Conference Rookie of the Month for December/January and February. He finished third in Rookie of the Year voting behind the Charlotte Hornets’ LaMelo Ball and Minnesota Timberwolves’ Anthony Edwards.
Haliburton has three years remaining on his rookie-scale contract, which also includes a team option for 2023-24. He is owed $4 million this season, $4.2 million next season and $5.8 million in the final year.
