Sacked Avon and Somerset police officer loses appeal

A former Avon and Somerset Constabulary officer who was sacked after allegedly lying to her colleagues has had her appeal thrown out.

Amanda Nixon was dismissed without notice following a professional misconduct hearing in January.

The panel found that she failed to act after she was asked to make transport arrangements for a witness in July last year in connection with an assault case. She later claimed she had not read the email until it was too late.

The hearing notice said Ms Nixon “failed to diligently conduct her duties by forgetting to make the necessary arrangements and/or she acted without honesty and integrity by deciding not to make the arrangements”.

She did not accept she had been dishonest or that her actions amounted to gross misconduct, and argued that the sanction against her was unreasonable.

Mukhtar Hussain QC, who chaired a police appeals tribunal earlier this month, said: “Given the appellant’s mitigation as to her inexperience, workload, lack of training and mentoring, and other matters so ably put before us on her behalf that the sanction may appear to be harsh.

“However, we are satisfied that the decision to dismiss was not out of range of decisions a panel could have reached and therefore, it is not unreasonable or unfair in all the circumstances.”
