Sacha Baron Cohen ditches undercover characters after fearing for his life at gun rally

Sacha Baron Cohen has admitted that his days of playing undercover characters might be over after he was left 'fearing for his life' while filming Borat 2.

The 49-year-old actor, known for playing figures such as Borat Sagdiyev and Ali G, revealed that he wore a bullet proof vest while recording at a gun rally but feared that he might be shot at.

Speaking to NPR, the actor admitted that it was worrying scenes such as the gun rally - that appears in the Borat Subsequent Moviefilm - that have made him think twice about the future of playing such characters.

"At some point, your luck runs out. And so I never wanted to do this stuff again," he told the publication "I can't."

The Borat sequel centres on the character as he returns to the United States with the aim of handing his daughter Tutar Sagdiyev (Maria Bakalova) over as a gift to a political figure.

Reflecting on the scenes, Sacha recalled putting his life at risk by going undercover at a pro-gun rally attended by a series of far-right groups.

"I was wearing a bulletproof vest, and that's only the second time in my career that I've ever done that," he said.

"But I was told that there was a chance that somebody might try to shoot at me. I was very aware that once the crowd realized that I was a fake, that it could turn really ugly and it could be really dangerous.

Following the release of the Borat sequel, it actually emerged that Sacha Baron Cohen was recognised by members of the crowd and had to make a hasty exit as an angry mob tried to storm the stage.

The actor later told NPR that it might signal the end for characters like Borat.

He continued: "I kept on coming back to this feeling. Again, I didn't want to do Borat again. I didn't want to go undercover again.

"I felt I had to do anything I could to remind people of what, in 90 minutes, in a humorous way, of what Trump had done the prior four years, and I felt I had to try and infiltrate his inner circle, which we did do with Rudy Giuliani and Mike Pence.

"We felt we had to do that. I felt I had to get this movie out before the election. But, yes, maybe I'm crazy.

Sacha's second Borat movie caused quite the controversy after footage caught Donald Trump's personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani in compromising scenes in a hotel room with the actor playing Borat's daughter.

The actor's movie even caught the attention of Trump, who branded him 'creepy' before Sacha hit back and thanked him for the free publicity before referring to him as a 'racist buffoon'.
