Sabrina Carpenter sends fans into a frenzy as she hints at new music in cryptic clip

Sabrina Carpenter has fuelled speculation that new music is imminent, after posting a cryptic teaser to her Instagram.

The short, vintage-style video shows the 26-year-old pop star stranded on the side of a dusty road, dressed in a white blouse, denim cut-offs and silver heels, attempting to hitch a ride.

As the otherwise silent clip ends, she sighs, “Oh boy”, which proved enough to send fans into a frenzy.

“NEW MUSIC!????????” one follower commented, while another asked: “New Song Coming?”

A third declared: “She’s coming for the SONG OF THE SUMMER again. What a QUEEN.”

“SUMMER OF SABRINA AND MAY IT CONTINUE FOREVER,” another excitedly shared.

The teaser shared on Monday follows the breakout success of Espresso, the platinum-selling hit from Carpenter’s Short n’ Sweet album, which saw her rise from Disney graduate to full-blown chart force.

That momentum continues this week as Carpenter headlines Barcelona’s Primavera Sound festival, alongside Charli XCX and Chappell Roan.

For those not attending in person, the full event will be livestreamed on Prime Video and the Amazon Music Twitch channel from Wednesday, 4 June to Sunday, June 8.

And while Carpenter’s musical star is soaring, Hollywood may be calling next.

She is reportedly being considered for a leading role in Mamma Mia 3, the long-awaited third instalment of the billion-dollar ABBA musical franchise.

Producer Judy Craymer confirmed the script is complete and hinted that Carpenter could be a natural fit for the next chapter in an interview with Deadline.

“She’d be a goddess or some relation who would look very much like Meryl Streep,” Craymer said, referencing Carpenter’s resemblance to Streep’s iconic character Donna Sheridan.

Theories are already circulating among fans that Carpenter could play Donna’s granddaughter — or even reprise a young Donna in new flashback sequences, as Lily James did in the 2018 prequel Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.

Carpenter, who has cited Mamma Mia! as a dream project, recently met ABBA’s Björn Ulvaeus in Stockholm and has long embraced the band’s legacy, even naming her two cats Benny and Björn. Her Short n’ Sweet tour also included nods to the Swedish supergroup.

Originally released in 2008, Mamma Mia! adapted the hit West End musical for screen and starred Streep, Amanda Seyfried and Pierce Brosnan in a sun-drenched tale of love and nostalgia. The sequel added another $400 million to the franchise’s global box office haul.

Carpenter has spoken of her passion for the musical. “There’s something magical about films that make you feel like dancing in your seat,” she said in a 2024 interview. “If I ever got to do something like Mamma Mia, I think my 10-year-old self would explode.”
