Short ‘n’ Sweet songstress Sabrina Carpenter has swiftly shut down claims that her W Magazine photoshoot was inspired by Adrian Lyne‘s 1997 film adaptation of Vladimir Nabokov‘s controversial book Lolita.
If you’re chronically online like I am, you would know that Carpenter and her upcoming album, Man’s Best Friend, have been making waves across the internet in the past week.

However, alongside the discourse of her upcoming project, it appears that Carpenter’s 2024 W Magazine photoshoot has also become an internet talking point.
Things kicked up when Frey (@arcafan999) made a TikTok on The Pop Faction’s (@thepopfaction) Instagram post, which drew comparisons to Carpenter’s photoshoot to a scene in Lolita.
And for folks who are not in the know about Lolita, both the book and the movies (yes, plural) have recieved a shit tonne of backlash as it follows a grown-ass man and his obsession with a 12-year-old girl.
In the W Magazine shoot, Carpenter is pictured lying down on a lawn with a sprinkler going off in the background; as a result, her dress has gone slightly see-through. In the Lolita scene, the character Dolores Haze (Lolita) is also lying on a lawn, reading a book, with a sprinkler operating in the back.
As Dolores reads her book, the sprinkler also soaks her and her outfit, causing her clothes to become see-through.

“What the? I’m sorry for my language, but what the F is this?” Frey said in the TikTok, which now has more than 2.1 million views.
Shortly after the video went gangbusters on TikTok, Carpenter herself took to the comments section, denying that the shoot had anything to do with the controversial movie.
“I’ve never seen this movie. It’s never been on my mood board and never would be,” she penned to the TikToker.
In response to Carpenter’s comment, Frey fired back by referencing the “Nonsense” outro she used during an Eras Tour gig in Mexico, where she sang, “I’m full-grown but I look like a niña (child) / Come put something big in my casita (little house)”.
Carpenter has yet to respond to Frey’s clapback. However, the response to the singer’s comment has seen a mixed bag of reactions.

About a week ago, Carpenter sent the internet into overdrive after revealing the title and cover art for her next album, Man’s Best Friend.
After dropping the upcoming project, Carpenter was accused of “setting feminism back a hundred years” while others defended her and criticised the public for their lack of media literacy.
While the singer hasn’t directly responded to the discourse, she did respond to one fan asking if she has “a personality outside of sex”.
“Girl, yes, and it is goooooood,” the “Taste” singer clapped back to the now-deleted tweet.
Carpenter’s Man’s Best Friend is set to drop August 29.
