Saatva vs Tempur-Pedic mattress toppers: Which one should you buy?

The Saatva High-Density Mattress Topper and Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Adapt Mattress Topper side by side.

While Saatva and Tempur-Pedic make premium mattresses that can be outside many budgets, both luxury brands do offer a cheaper way to experience their signature quality: mattress toppers.

Saatva and Tempur-Pedic each have a place in this year's guide to the best mattress toppers, but there are some key differences between their bed topper line-ups.

Tempur-Pedic's Tempur-Adapt Mattress Topper currently takes the top spot in the guide, but Saatva features twice—which is to be expected from the brand whose best-selling mattress is currently the best mattress of the year.

So, which brand offers the better bed toppers? Here, we're comparing the mattress topper line-up of both Saatva and Tempur-Pedic in terms of price and mattress deals, design and materials, and comfort and support, to help you decide which makes the right bed toppers for you. Here's what you need to know...

Saatva vs Tempur-Pedic Mattress Toppers: Price & deals

  • Saatva bed toppers are never on sale, but often included in bundles
  • Discounts on Tempur-Pedic toppers range from 10% off to 40% off
  • Saatva offers a 180-night trial; Tempur-Pedic's toppers are non-returnable

While Saatva mattress sales on its top luxury beds are frequent, they never seem to apply to mattress toppers. However, you can sometimes get a reduction when buying a certain amount of bedding as part of a bundle deal.

In Saatva's six-strong mattress topper collection, the cheapest option you'll find is its High-Density Foam Topper. This memory foam bed topper has a starting price of $175 and a price of $245 for a queen. At the other end of the scale, Saatva's most expensive mattress topper, the Organic Quilted Mattress Topper, is $995 for a queen.

In terms of benefits, Saatva offers a pretty generous sleep trial of 180 nights (the average mattress topper trial lasts 30 days) and free shipping. The 1-year limited warranty is pretty paltry, however, especially when you consider that the average bed topper warranty is five years.

Over at Tempur-Pedic, you will find deals on both of its mattress toppers, though discounts can vary. The cheaper mattress topper, the Tempur-Cloud topper, is $199 for a queen at full price, while a queen Tempur-Adapt Topper is $349.

Currently, you can get 10% off one of Tempur's mattress toppers (the discount alternates between the two), with a queen Tempur-Cloud down to $179, but in the past we've seen up to 40% off. So, timing is important when buying Tempur-Pedic's mattress toppers.

We've also seen some great Tempur-Pedic mattress sales on its toppers at Amazon, with up to 62% off Tempur-Adapt topper during Amazon's big spring sale this year.

We usually don't recommend buying a mattress topper from a third-party retailer as they won't offer the benefits of buying directly from the brand, but in this case you'll get a better deal from Amazon as it at least offers returns; bed toppers are non-returnable at Tempur-Pedic.

Saatva vs Tempur-Pedic Mattress Toppers: Materials & design

  • Saatva offers foam, latex, microcoil, and down bed toppers
  • Tempur-Pedic's toppers are made from "Tempur-Material" foam
  • Saatva has six bed toppers in its collection; Tempur-Pedic has two

As Saatva has more mattress toppers in its line-up, there's more variety in terms of design and materials. You'll find an organic latex topper, two memory foam toppers, a down alternative topper, a microcoil topper and an organic quilted topper, with the memory foam toppers being the cheapest and the organic quilted topper the most expensive.

With the exception of the Organic Quilted Topper, all Saatva mattress toppers come with anchor straps to keep the topper in place on your mattress. They are all primed with a Guardin botanical antimicrobial treatment to prevent the growth of bacteria and allergens such as mold.

Tempur-Pedic, on the other hand, makes both its toppers out of the same dust-mite and allergen-resistant material: Tempur-Material. This propriety material is a type of synthetic foam that's similar to traditional memory foam, but more durable. The Tempur-Cloud is made with two inches of this foam, while the Tempur-Adapt is three inches tall. Both come with removable and washable covers, but the Tempur-Adapt also comes with anchor straps to keep the topper secured.

Saatva Classic vs Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress: Comfort & support

  • Both Tempur-Pedic toppers are designed to soften too-firm beds
  • You can opt to give your Tempur-Adapt topper a cooling upgrade
  • Saatva's bed toppers are made to either soften or add support

Of course, if you want to get the best comfort and support, you'll need to consider a number of factors. With that in mind I strongly suggest you take a look at our guide on how to choose a mattress topper.

We've tried two Saatva mattress toppers, the Graphite Memory Foam Mattress Topper and the High-Density Foam Topper. Both were great memory foam mattress toppers to test and received positive reviews.

Our testers for the Saatva Foam Mattress Topper review felt it provided ample cushioning for side sleeping and slept cool despite it not being billed as cooling. Meanwhile, testers for the Saatva Graphite mattress topper review loved its fantastic cooling capabilities and soothing support for back sleepers. However, both reviews complained about the toppers' covers not being removable or machine-washable.

While we have yet to test the rest of Saatva's toppers, its Natural Latex Topper is designed to give a durable, buoyant feel, while its Organic Quilted Topper is designed to give a plusher buoyant feel. Its microcoil mattress topper, on the other hand, is intended to have a body-contouring, responsive feel.

We've also tested the Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Adapt Mattress Topper and its cooling upgrade, the Tempur-Adapt + Cooling Mattress Topper. In our Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Adapt Topper review we rated this one so highly that we decided to make it the top recommendation in our mattress topper buyer's guide.

We loved its plush cushioning, which makes it a cost-effective alternative to buying a top mattress for side sleepers as it softens any bed, as well as its removable, washable cover. However, it did sleep warm, but in our Tempur-Adapt + Cooling Mattress Topper review we found that this cooling upgrade made a world of difference.

Bear in mind that both the Tempur-Cloud and Tempur-Adapt are designed to soften hard beds, which is great news for side sleepers, which means that front and back sleepers will need something firmer for more support.

Saatva vs Tempur-Pedic Mattress Toppers: Which should you buy?

You want a variety of choices: Saatva has six toppers in its collection, and all vary in materials, benefits, price, and design.

You want to add support: The Saatva Graphite Memory Foam Mattress Topper provided soothing support to our back sleepers, while the brand's latex mattress toppers are designed to offer durability and bounce.

You want to have the option to return: Saatva offers a generous 180-night sleep trial with all of its mattress toppers.

Choose a Tempur-Pedic mattress topper if...

You want to soften a hard bed: Both the Tempur-Cloud and Tempur-Adapt are body-contouring and are designed to add extra cushioning to the bed.

You're a side sleeper: Side sleepers will need extra cushioning around the shoulders and hips, which the cradling Tempur-Material found in these mattress toppers can deliver.

You want to find a good deal: You can often find between 10 and 40% off these mattress toppers, not to mention some excellent flash deals on Amazon.
