SA records 2,093 cases of COVID-19, and the deaths of two aged care residents

Premier Steven Marshall says the causes of the latest deaths are being investigated. (ABC News)

South Australia has recorded another 2,093 cases of COVID-19, including two aged care residents who have died with the virus.

The daily case record is a significant increase on yesterday’s 1,374 cases.

There are 44 people with COVID-19 now in hospital. Four are in intensive care, one of them on a ventilator.

Premier Steven Marshall said the deaths of the two aged care residents were being investigated.

"There hasn't been a determination of death but we do know both these people were COVID-positive at the time of their death, and we know their deaths have been referred to the coroner," he said.

They are the seventh and eighth people to die in South Australia with COVID-19, after the state reported the death of a COVID-positive baby yesterday.

The Department of Corrective Services (DCS) has confirmed an inmate at the Adelaide Women's Prison is among the new cases.

"The prisoner was recently admitted and in quarantine when she tested positive," a DCS spokesperson said.

Quarantine for international arrivals scrapped

Requirements for people wishing to enter South Australia from interstate or overseas have been relaxed.

Effective immediately, people entering SA from interstate will no longer need to use the government's EntryCheck SA app, nor will they be required to undergo a rapid antigen test upon entry.

Mr Marshall said the requirements were "not a good use of resources".

The Premier also announced quarantine requirements for international arrivals who have had two doses of an approved COVID-19 vaccine will be scrapped.

"That will be removed as of midnight tonight. It is still a requirement for people who are not fully vaccinated to do 14 days isolation in a medi-hotel."

Record testing day

South Australian pathology services processed 25,943 tests yesterday, the highest ever daily intake.

Mr Marshall said SA Pathology reported a downturn in the number of asymptomatic people getting a PCR test, which had accounted for two-thirds of all testing earlier this week.

"We've seen that drop off to about 50 per cent yesterday, but it's still too high," he said.

Some of Adelaide's drive-through testing clinics are closed for a time today due to extreme heat, but will re-open from 5:30pm to midnight.

"We've also set up an additional testing facility on Manton Street Hindmarsh, it's indoors and air-conditioned, and it will be open from 10:30am through to 5:30pm," Mr Marshall said.
