Cartwright ton earns WA draw in Shield

WA's Hilton Cartwright celebrates his sixth first-class ton in the Sheffield Shield draw with SA. (AAP)

Western Australia's Hilton Cartwright has scored the fifth century of the opening Sheffield Shield game of the season to secure a draw against South Australia at Adelaide Oval.

The teams agreed to finish the game five minutes before tea on the final day at Karen Rolton Oval, with WA declaring their second innings on 6-292, a lead of 265, with Cartwright on 121 and Joel Paris on 17.

Cartwright, who scored 69 in the first innings, but hadn't notched a Shield century since the 2017-18 season, punished all the SA spinners in the middle session after being given a life just after lunch.

SA took three wickets in the first session on Monday to have WA four down and boost their chances of an outright victory.

They blew their best chance when captain Travis Head dropped Cartwright at slip on 38 off legspinner Lloyd Pope in the second over after lunch, with WA just 128 ahead.

Cartwright capitalised on the let-off and pounded Pope for 22 in the leggie's next over and finished with 12 fours and four sixes.

His batting partner Josh Philippe hit another couple of boundaries off the spinner's following over.

However, Head persevered with Pope (3-123) who gained revenge when Philippe (25) charged down the wicket and was stumped by Alex Carey.

Head had Josh Inglis (13) caught at slip by Jake Weatherald, but Cartwright and Paris added 45 to secure a draw for their side.

SA's hopes of victory, soared after paceman David Grant (2-34) took two wickets in the sixth over off the day, dismissing Sam Whiteman (40) and Cameron Green (2)

A stubborn fourth wicket stand of 53 between Cartwright and Marsh (36), held up SA until 15 minutes before lunch when the latter clipped a Pope full toss to midwicket

Earlier in the game Marsh and Green each hit a century for WA while Head and Jake Carder reached three figures for SA.
