SA posts surge in full-time jobs

Nearly 4000 full-time jobs were created last month says Innovation and Skills Minister David Pisoni. (AAP)

Full-time employment in South Australia has hit record levels with a surge in new jobs last month, the state government says.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics said unemployment in SA rose to 5.0 per cent in August, up from 4.7 per cent the previous month.

But Innovation and Skills Minister David Pisoni said 3900 full-time jobs were created, taking full-time employment to a record 569,500.

He said the number of people in full-time and part-time work was also the second highest on record, illustrating the strength of the SA economy.

"Another extremely pleasing result is the fall in youth unemployment to a 12-year low and a full percentage point below the national average," Mr Pisoni said.

"South Australia's strong performance of youth unemployment is the reason why young people are choosing to stay rather than chase jobs interstate."

The minister said SA's unemployment rate of 5.0 per cent was 2.7 percentage points lower than at the same time last year.
