Missing Queensland woman last seen in Streaky Bay was on holiday with family, police say

A Queensland woman who went missing on South Australia's western Eyre Peninsula three days ago had travelled to the area with family for a holiday, and had no known contacts in the region, police have said.

SA Police are seeking help from the public to find 48-year-old Julie, whose last name has not been publicly released and who was last seen about 5pm on Sunday, May 7, in Streaky Bay.

Mounted police today joined the search of the town and its surrounds, which has also involved a police helicopter with heat-sensing technology, a drone, a boat, and State Emergency Services (SES) and Country Fire Service crews on the ground.

"Family, friends, relatives have not heard from her. We've received no reports from anyone who's sighted her or been able to identify her from the Streaky Bay area and as time goes on obviously our concerns for her wellbeing and welfare are increasing," SA Police Superintendent Paul Bahr said.

Police said Julie was unfamiliar with the area and described her disappearance as "out of character", and said that other family members have since travelled to Streaky Bay.

"There's no indication of anything untoward or foul play, if you like, but we still are keeping very much an open mind," he said.

"From what we understand she has no family, friends or relatives or acquaintances in the Eyre Peninsula area at all, she's come here purely on holiday."

She is described as being about 170cm tall with dark shoulder-length hair, and she was last seen wearing jeans, a blue-striped top with a star in the middle and light-coloured boots.

Anyone who sees Julie or knows of her whereabouts is asked to contact the Police Assistance Line immediately on 131 444.

Police have appealed for the public's assistance after receiving a report of a female seen hitchhiking along Jessie Flat Road between 8:30am and 10:30am on Monday.

The woman was seen near the corner of Jessie Flat Road and Jubilee Road.

Police would like to hear from anyone who saw her on Jessie Flat Road or who has dash-cam footage.

"It is not the most common-travelled road, Jessie Flat Road … it's kind of an industrial area that bypasses the Streaky Bay township," Inspector Michael Ball told ABC Radio's Emma Pedler.

Inspector Ball said police have been doorknocking in the area, and encouraged Streaky Bay locals to check their sheds or properties and contact police if they find "anything that may be disturbed or not quite right".

"The public has been quite helpful in terms of information and checking their properties," he said.

Streaky Bay is a coastal town about 720 kilometres from Adelaide and about 300 kilometres north-west of Port Lincoln.
