SA Opposition announces counter-terrorism policy

SA Opposition Leader Steven Marshall says the policy will focus on places like Glenelg and Henley Beach.

South Australia's Opposition has promised to conduct a full audit of all open public spaces in the state to prevent terrorist attacks if it wins next year's March election.

The state's police force would be tasked to rollout the audit, which is the first part of the Liberal party's anti-terrorism policy.

Opposition Leader Steven Marshall said it would build on the Federal Government's crowded spaces terrorism framework.

"We need to do work in places like Henley Beach, in places like Glenelg," he said.

"We need a comprehensive framework right across South Australia to look at the most likely sites and make sure we are mitigating against that terrorism risk."

Adelaide Lord Mayor Martin Haese said his council was the first to act when Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull asked city councils to look at the safety of its downtown city malls.

"We've always had a wonderful mall but now we can underwrite its security and its safety for generations to follow," he said.

Mr Haese said anything that could build on that work would benefit the community.

"Being a safe city is a great strength of Adelaide, it's a great strength of South Australia," Mr Haese said.

"So a comprehensive audit of Adelaide and indeed metropolitan Adelaide we would welcome."

South Australia's government has been strong in ensuring public spaces are safe for residents, since a series of terrorist attacks overseas.

Premier Jay Weatherill has pushed to strengthen bail and parole laws to ensure people with terrorism links are kept in jail.
