South Australia's COVID-19 border restrictions with Victoria could soon be eased with the state's transition committee to hold a special meeting on Friday to finalise the changes.
It's expected the committee will move to lift the hard border closure and allow people from Victoria to come to SA provided they home quarantine for 14 days.
A less likely option is to force them into hotel quarantine.
Lifting the isolation measures completely could then come at some stage in December, at least in time for Christmas, however, that will depend on case numbers in Victoria remaining low.
Police Commissioner Grant Stevens would not speculate on the exact date border changes would be made, but said the meeting on Friday should put officials in a position to make specific announcements.
"We know people are anxious, they want to know what's going on and we want to provide that information as quickly as possible," Mr Stevens told reporters.
The possible move on Victorian borders came as SA reported one new COVID-19 case on Tuesday with a man in his 40s testing positive after recently returning from overseas.
He remains in hotel quarantine and poses no threat to the wider community.
His case takes the total in SA since the start of the pandemic to 518, with just 17 of those still considered active infections.
All of those people are in hotel isolation.
