SA Labor MP Jon Gee to call it quits

SA Labor MP Jon Gee says he will quit state parliament at the next election in March 2021. (AAP)

South Australian Labor MP Jon Gee is to quit state parliament at the next election.

Mr Gee said he came to the decision after significant reflection over the Christmas period.

He has served in the parliament since 2014, initially in the seat of Napier and since the last election as the member for Taylor, in Adelaide's northern suburbs.

"Spending time in my community has always been a highlight of the job," Mr Gee said in a statement on Wednesday.

"I love the northern suburbs. It's where I live and it's where I have worked for most of my life.

"I want to thank the people of the north, whom I have been proud to serve."

Before entering politics, Mr Gee was a senior union official, supporting workers in the automotive sector.

Labor leader Peter Malinauskas said he had been a champion for the people of the northern suburbs.

"Before entering parliament, Jon spent most of his working life standing up for workers at Holden and in the automotive industry," Mr Malinauskas said.

"His passion for working people has been front and centre throughout his parliamentary career."

South Australians go to the polls in March next year.
