SA Labor leader would chair virus group

SA Labor leader Peter Malinauskas will chair the COVID-19 transition committee if elected premier. (AAP)

South Australian Opposition Leader Peter Malinauskas says he will chair the state's COVID-19 transition committee if Labor wins the state election in March.

Signalling a shift to the current arrangements, Mr Malinauskas says it's important for the premier to be "at the table when the big decisions are being made".

Although Premier Steven Marshall says the committee will no longer meet once the state reaches the 90 per cent double-vaccinated target.

Under the current Liberal government, Mr Marshall doesn't sit on the transition committee, which rules on coronavirus restrictions and borders measures, but does relay most of its major decisions to the public.

The committee is chaired by the chief executive of the Department of Premier and Cabinet.

"The premier should not sit outside the room waiting to be told what is happening and why, when these policy decisions affect everybody in the state," Mr Malinauskas said.

"The people of South Australia elect the premier to lead and to be at the table when the big decisions are being made.

"That is exactly what I intend to do."

The opposition leader said under a Labor government, Police Commissioner Grant Stevens would retain all his existing powers as state coordinator through the major emergency declaration.

Chief Public Health Officer Nicola Spurrier would also continue to be a member of the committee providing expert health advice.

However, Mr Marshall said "the committee goes" once SA reaches its 90 per cent target for those aged 12 and over, a milestone the state is expected to hit later this month.

"He wants to chair a committee that won't even exist," the premier said of the Labor's leader's pledge.
