South Aust jobless rate lowest in nation

South Australia has the lowest state jobless rate in the nation amid other good news on the economic front with an improvement in the budget outlook.

Unemployment in SA fell to 6.2 per cent in November, down from seven per cent the previous month.

That leaves the state well below the national rate of 6.8 per cent.

It came as figures also showed an improvement in projected GST returns, shaving a $300 million off the state's forecast budget deficit for 2020/21.

"It is the first time in more than a decade that South Australia has the lowest unemployment rate of the states and these numbers reflect the growing confidence in the economy," Innovation and Skills Minister David Pisoni said.

"South Australia has had the strongest rebound in full-time employment of the states and is the only state to have more people in full-time employment than at the start of the year."

More than 44,000 jobs have been added in SA since May.

Property Council executive director Daniel Gannon said the combination of the low jobless rate and high business confidence was a "magical mix" for SA.

"This year has been challenging for business and property owners alike, but with the right policy settings and government stimulus, South Australia can bounce out of this pandemic stronger," Mr Gannon said.

"There's no better time to market South Australia to investors interstate and abroad to ensure we capitalise on our comparatively healthy, safe and resilient economy."

Treasurer Rob Lucas said the forecast higher GST meant the write-down embedded in the state budget would not be only $1 billion.

"This is a further optimistic sign that the national economy continues to recover from the greatest economic challenge of our time in COVID-19, with more people back in work and household consumption improving," Mr Lucas said.
