
An artisan paints the face of a life-size doll in his workshop in Nakagawa, Fukuoka Prefecture, in preparation for the upcoming Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival. The dolls will be part of elaborate kazariyama displays that can be seen at 12 locations from July 1-15. "I've imbued this year's work with prayers that the pandemic can be brought under control," Hideaki Shirouzu said Saturday. "I hope the finished product will help make this summer all the more memorable in Hakata."
