SA Government promises Park 'n' Ride facility at Paradise Interchange

The South Australian Government has promised nearly $19 million for an upgrade to the Paradise Interchange if re-elected — similar to an election promise also being made by the Liberals.

Labor's plan includes building a Park 'n' Ride facility and making improvements to the Darley Road southern intersection.

There will be 350 new car parks, with disabled and motorcycle parks and electric car recharge points also forming part of the project.

Transport Minister Stephen Mullighan said the improvements would improve congestion and safety issues.

"These investments in park and rides are one of the most effective ways that we can encourage more people to use public transport and particularly here at Paradise where we've had an ongoing problem with car parking along Daley Road for several years," Mr Mullighan said.

"This announcement will take a huge amount of pressure off the local roads, off Darley Road."

The Labor Party promised an expansion parking at Paradise at the last election, to be funded with proceeds from a proposed CBD car parking levy.

But the levy was blocked by the Opposition, Family First and John Darley, who at the time was part of the Nick Xenophon team — killing off the Park 'n' Ride funding.

In January the Liberals pledged $7.5 million towards a Park 'n' Ride facility at the Paradise Interchange if elected.

The Liberals' proposal included 300 car parks.

Labor has previously 'failed to deliver' Paradise upgrade

Liberal spokesman David Pisoni denied the Park 'n' Ride facility originally promised by the Labor Party never went ahead because the Opposition blocked the car park tax.

"What today's announcement from the Labor Party proves is that this could be built without the car park tax," Mr Pisoni said.

"The facts are, Labor promised to deliver this at the last election and they failed to do so."

The Paradise Interchange is located in the seat of Hartley, currently being held by the Liberals' Vincent Tarzia.

The seat will also be contested at the March election by Nick Xenophon and Labor's Grace Portolesi who held the seat before Mr Tarzia.

Mr Pisoni said Labor's announcement today was "playing catch-up" to the Liberals' announcement weeks ago.

Mr Xenophon welcomed Labor's announcement.

"Unambiguously, it's a great thing and it's a good thing that Hartley is getting a lot of attention," Mr Xenophon said.

"This is one thing where there is cross-party unity.

"This is a long overdue facility and it's a good thing."
