SA confident of COVID-19 vaccine take-up

South Australian authorities believe there will be a strong take-up of the COVID vaccine. (AAP)

Strong compliance with existing vaccines is giving the South Australian government confidence people will have the COVID-19 jab when it becomes available.

The government said local immunisation rates for children between 12 and 15 months rose to 94.7 per cent last year, up from 91 per cent five years ago.

Vaccination rates among five-year-olds hit 94.6 per cent.

Health Minister Stephen Wade said the immunisation rates were especially pleasing given the imminent rollout of the COVID-19 vaccination program.

"Vaccines save lives and protect lives and that fact has never been more pertinent than today, as we see the devastating impacts COVID-19 is having around the world," he said.

"Immunisation is one of our best tools in the fight against this virus and other viruses and, once the COVID-19 vaccine program is up and running, I would encourage all South Australians to get vaccinated."

But Deputy Chief Public Health Officer Mike Cusack said South Australia had not considered making the vaccine compulsory or a condition of entry to some venues.
