SA boy missing for more than eight months found in Tasmania

Missing Adelaide boy Thomas Alexander Bakyrey has been found in Tasmania and his mother has been arrested by authorities after a nationwide search.

The four-year-old boy had not seen his father, Sergiy Fedirovich Bakyrey, for more than eight months and was last seen at Kurralta Park in Adelaide's south-west in October.

His 38-year-old mother, Sarah Elizabeth Tate, was arrested in Launceston, Tasmania.

In a statement, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) said authorities recovered Thomas yesterday.

"The AFP would like to thank the public and media for their continued interest and support in the matter," it stated.

A court spokesman thanked the public for their help.

"Thomas was recovered in Launceston," he said.

"Sarah Tate has also been arrested. Information was received via Crime Stoppers that resulted from the media coverage."

The Federal Circuit Court of Australia issued an order allowing police and Family Court authorities to recover the child and to allow details — generally the subject of statutory suppressions — to be released to the media.

When the AFP released Thomas' name and image, acting operations manager Paul Hopkins said he could only imagine what Mr Bakyrey and his family were going through.

"The pain of a missing child is incomparable. Hiding a child from their families can have adverse effects," he said.
