GSC Game World announced that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl’s expansion Cost of Hope launches on Aug. 20. The DLC releases alongside Update 2.0, a free patch for all owners of the base game.
Cost of Hope is the first major expansion for Heart of Chornobyl aside from fixes GSC released after the game launched. The DLC continues Skif’s story and sends players back into the Zone for a new campaign set during the long-running conflict between Duty and Freedom.
The expansion adds two major regions: the Iron Forest and the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant. Both areas include new hubs, side activities, quests, secrets, and threats, significantly expanding the playable map.
The story will have Skif deal with the conflict between Duty and Freedom, as the factions are at each other’s throats again and the very fragile peace is on the brink of collapsing. Duty wants the Zone destroyed, while Freedom believes it should be studied and used. Player choices affect the DLC’s path and outcome, continuing the series’ tradition.
Update 2.0 for the base game launches on the same day as Cost of Hope. The patch includes a move to a newer version of Unreal Engine 5, along with new content and major fixes for the base game. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 launched on Unreal Engine 5.1, and GSC Game World promised an engine upgrade for 2026 in its post-launch roadmap.
It’s currently unknown if any of these changes will address A-Life 2.0, the game’s advanced artificial intelligence and ecosystem simulation engine designed to control NPC factions, mutants, and life in the Zone. It was very broken on release, and GSC Game World patched it, but issues with it are still being reported.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl is available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, and Cost of Hope will be available on all these platforms on Aug. 20.
