Rylan Clark Slams Shop After Mum's Escalator Fall

Rylan Clark has hit out after shop staff charged his mum, Linda, for a pair of flip flops she was forced to wear following a nasty tumble on an escalator.

During a chat on his BBC Radio 2 show, the presenter told listeners about the incident, which left Linda — who often appears with him on Celebrity Gogglebox — with cuts and bloodied legs after falling backwards down a moving staircase in a well-known high street store.

“I think it was slippery or something like that, whatever,” Rylan explained, trying to make sense of what happened. “Regardless, anyway, so everyone’s gone rushing over to her, she cut all her legs, bless her”, reported the Manchester Evening News.

“They’ve turned the escalator off and got her off and whatever, and obviously because there was blood like running down her leg, it had gone into her shoe, awful.”

What made Rylan even more furious was what happened next. Shop staff gave Linda a pair of flip flops to wear, but didn’t exactly do so out of kindness.

“So, they gave her a pair of flip flops, only when she got to the counter they charged her £2.50 for the flip flops,” he said, still sounding stunned by it.

“They charged her £2.50 for the flip flops they gave her because her shoes were filled with blood from falling off their escalator!”

His co-host didn’t hold back either, saying, “You know what that is? That is not having any class.”

Rylan continued, clearly still annoyed: “Like just have a bit of decency, this is a 70-year-old woman who fell down your escalators, I think you can swallow £2.50 for a pair of flip flops.”

He added: “Oh if I was there, you can imagine me. Imagine if I would have been there.”

He made clear that he wasn’t trying to shame the store as a whole, but was frustrated with the lack of empathy in that moment.

“This is not a derogatory against the store, or anyone,” he said. “It’s just in that moment, when she rang me, you can imagine, she’s in a state, my brother luckily enough was nearby, so went and picked her up and what have you.”

Despite the situation, Rylan said Linda had seen the funny side: “But she was laughing, she was like, ‘You won’t believe what happened’.”

Just to add to the chaos, Linda herself then texted into the show while it was live to correct him, and it only made Rylan laugh harder.

“[She said] Not £2.50, 90 pence! It’s the fact she’s [sent a] text, she’s still fuming from it, 90 pence, she’s even put pence, p-e-n-c-e, she’s spelt it out,” he laughed.

Luckily, Rylan confirmed this incident happened before her much more serious fall in Spain two years ago, where she ended up breaking both her leg and arm while on holiday. She had to be flown home on a private jet and needed surgery, with Rylan taking time off work to care for her.

Two months later, he marked his 35th birthday by sharing a photo of Linda back at his home for the first time since the accident, delighting fans who had followed her recovery.
