Ryder Cup 2025 live: Day 1 results after McIlroy and Lowry deliver final hole drama for Europe

Team Europe took a 5.5-2.5 lead on Day 1 of the Ryder Cup to rock Team USA’s chances at Bethpage Black. Final hole drama saw Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose down Bryson DeChambeau and Ben Griffin in fourballs, though Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry were forced to settle for a half point against Sam Burns and Patrick Cantlay.

Luke Donald will be delighted to have won the afternoon session after Europe dominated the opening foursomes session, quietening the home crowd to take a 3-1 lead. For the first time in Ryder Cup history, Europe scored the first three points away from home as Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton overcame a shaky start to beat USA stars DeChambeau and Justin Thomas 4&3, while McIlroy and Fleetwood surged to a 5&4 win over Collin Morikawa and Harris English.

After Matthew Fitzpatrick and Ludvig Aberg took down World No 1 Scottie Scheffler and Russel Henley 5&3, the USA’s hopes of avoiding a morning landslide fell on the final group, but Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantley finally got a point on the board, beating Robert MacIntyre and Viktor Hovland on the final hole.

Following the arrival of US president Donald Trump to Bethpage Black at lunchtime, the home nation’s fortunes improved, with rookie Cameron Young thriving alongside Thomas to earn a comfortable 6&5 win over Aberg and rookie Rasmus Hojgaard. While Jon Rahm and Sepp Straka fought back with a superb 3&2 win over world No 1 Scheffler and US Open champion JJ Spaun.

Ben Griffin reacts to defeat against Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood

07:00 , Jack Rathborn

“Yeah, it was a tough match. They both played very solid, Tommy and Justin. They kept it in play together a lot. I felt like I was out of position a little bit in the middle there. Gave myself a lot of looks coming down the stretch, and I just couldn't get too much to fall.

“But yeah, it was a tight race. I thought we were building some momentum early. Just kind of leveled out there for a while and just never got hot on the back nine. It happens, and we're going to have to step on the gas tomorrow.”

Luke Donald hails Matt Fitzpatrick after Ryder Cup point on Day 1

06:00 , Jack Rathborn

“Yeah, they gelled very well. You never know when you're trying new partnerships under intense pressure, but they seemed very relaxed. Their personalities really gelled, and their games were fantastic.

“Fitzy especially played some scintillating golf. He looked very comfortable out there. He look very confident. Just great to see because, you know, there's been some media about his Ryder Cup record. You know, I've always kept telling him, you know, you just never know when it's time to go and make some points. You know, I mentioned it even two years ago that Seve's first two Ryder Cups, I think he made one point, and now he's the legend of Europe.

“So there's always time. There's always this moment that he can contribute, and you know, it was really good to see how well he played and how comfortable he looked out there.”

Luke Donald on Tommy Fleetwood's success at Ryder Cups

05:00 , Jack Rathborn

“Well, I think it's a little unfair to say he hasn't won a championship since a month ago. He's a world-class player that's won a bunch around the world.

“Yeah, it took him a little time and had to go through a few opportunities that let slip for sure, but I think that, you know, for Tommy, he reframes it in such a positive way. I think that if you see it in a positive way, the ones that get away, it only makes you stronger.

“You know, I think Tommy, he's a guy that just loves being around the team. He loves contributing to that team. Yeah, he's a nice player to play with. I think he's at the top of the list of a lot of guys on the team that people want to play with.”

Keegan Bradley on lessons learned from Day 1

04:00 , Jack Rathborn

“Well, I learned that Patrick Cantlay is a tough dude. I watched him out there, hit a lot of great shots, make a lot of incredible putts. Proud of the way the guys fought. It not easy when you are down in matches in a Ryder Cup and trying to fight back.

“You know, that was a really important halve we had on the last hole. That was a really important win that X and Patrick had in the morning session. I'm really proud of them for doing that. That kept us in this firmly.

“I think it's difficult to watch from -- it's more difficult to watch than actually play because you want them to play well so bad, and you don't have control over it. But it was fun watching them play. I look forward to celebrating tomorrow, seeing them make more putts and winning more holes.”

Bradley hits back at criticism over Morikawa/English pairing

03:00 , Jack Rathborn

“Well, we have a plan of what we're going to do. They beat us today, but you know, we're really comfortable with our plan. We're really comfortable with those two players. Excited who they are playing tomorrow,” Bradley said after Data Golf placed Morikawa and English 132nd out of 132 possible pairings the USA could make.

“Be an exciting match, and we're sticking to our plan. We're not going to panic. We're not going to panic and make those sort of mistakes. We're going to stick to what we know.

“We have a lot of confidence in them. I would say it's a little bit of both [data and gut instinct]. They were really bummed out that they lost their match today. They were eager to get back out on the course, and that's why we did that.”

Rory McIlroy appears to make offensive gesture towards the crowd at Ryder Cup

02:30 , Jack Rathborn

Rory McIlroy appeared to react to a fan at the Ryder Cup by making an offensive gesture on Day 1 at Bethpage Black.

The Northern Irishman helped inspire Europe to a 5.5-2.5 advantage after two sessions but after being heckled during his fourballs match alongside Shane Lowry, McIlroy could be seen raising a finger on his left hand as he walked off the 11th green.

McIlroy and Lowry had just gone two up against the American pair of Sam Burns and Patrick Cantlay when a video circulating on social media showed him gesturing in the direction of the crowd.

‘In Donald we trust’: Europe take charge of Ryder Cup’s first morning before Trump’s arrival

02:00 , Jack Rathborn

“In Donald we trust” read the flag hanging from a hospitality balcony along the 18th fairway as Air Force One flew overhead.

But as with much of the golf on this curious, topsy-turvy day on Long Island, things were not as they seemed.

The Donald flag was a European one, mid-blue was its backdrop and punctuated by a circle of yellowy-gold stars.

Rory McIlroy puts on a putting masterclass to ignite Team Europe’s Ryder Cup

Saturday 27 September 2025 00:30 , Jack Rathborn

Rory McIlroy didn’t look. As Tommy Fleetwood lined up the winning putt on the 14th green, McIlroy turned his back on his playing partner and faced the blue and yellow pocket of European supporters in a stand behind the green. The ball dropped into the cup, the fans leapt to their feet and McIlroy pumped his giant forearms with delight.

Fleetwood’s putt sealed a dominant 5&4 win in the first morning’s foursomes here at Bethpage Black. Fleetwood was excellent and McIlroy was sensational, delivering a putting masterclass to race away from Harris English and Collin Morikawa, going five up through eight holes. A brief embrace between the two teams on the last green was about the closest the Americans ever got.

Donald Trump gives USA unlikely Ryder Cup edge to counter Europe’s fast start

Saturday 27 September 2025 00:15 , Jack Rathborn

Donald Trump gripped Bryson DeChambeau’s hand firmly. The American golfer was grinning again after the misery of a 4&3 beatdown from Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton in Ryder Cup foursomes an hour earlier.

The President’s demeanour then turned serious though. DeChambeau, partnering Ben Griffin in the first fourball match after a damaging and stunning 3-1 defeat in the morning session, is a good friend of Trump, and holds a government role as the chair of the President's Council on Sports, Fitness and Nutrition, a role confirmed by Trump at the White House.

MacIntyre and Rose to reunite in Saturday morning foursomes?

Friday 26 September 2025 23:40 , Jack Rathborn

“I’d be surprised if he didn’t go with the three that won, I’d switch up the other one a little bit,” Catriona Matthew tells BBC 5 Live.

“It was great, an absolute honour to partner with this man [Lowry],” McIlroy says.

“We got half a point, I'm disappointed, but it's been a great day for Europe. We've come out of the gates strong. We should be proud of ourselves.

“It was rowdy and lively, they made it difficult for us. We made some good swings and putts when we needed to.”

McIlroy and Lowry forced to settle for a half point in gripping contest

Friday 26 September 2025 23:17 , Jack Rathborn

Tension, silence, just for a second... McIlroy sends it down to the hole, but it trickles to the left and MISSES.

The putter it flipped into the air, it’ll be a half point for both teams.

McIlroy with a putt for the win and a huge advantage for Europe

Friday 26 September 2025 23:13 , Jack Rathborn

Lowry for birdie, inches, closer... closer... But it dribbles to the left. Not enough power.

A nice read for McIlroy, Lowry was on line, but lacked the same pace as his teammate will require to hole it.

Burns now, to avoid a loss... Misses to the right! Drama, it’s there for McIlroy to win it!

Burns/Cantlay vs McIlroy/Lowry TIED

Rory McIlroy, middle of the fairway on the 18th at Bethpage Black, in the Ryder Cup. Chills.

Burns/Cantlay vs McIlroy/Lowry A/S

Friday 26 September 2025 23:06 , Chris Wilson

The European team look surprisingly worried as the players come up the fairway. That goes some way to suggesting just how vital a 6-2 first-day lead could be.

This one point is crucial, even this early on, especially when you consider that the US are unlikely to be as bad in parts as they were today (e.g. Scheffler, notably).

Burns/Cantlay vs McIlroy/Lowry A/S

Friday 26 September 2025 23:04 , Chris Wilson

Off the tee in the final hole of the day.

Burns lands just off the fairway with a solid effort, before Cantlay falls on the left side of the fairway.

What can the Europeans reply with?

Lowry’s drive lands to the left, narrow avoiding the bunkers, and McIlroy fires straight down the fairway.

'Lowry has just gone berserk'

Friday 26 September 2025 22:59 , Lawrence Ostlere at Bethpage Black

“Shane Lowry has just gone berserk on the 17th green watching McIlroy drain his birdie putt. That was so crucial. Over to Sam Burns, who makes his to take it to the last all square. Yikes.”

Burns/Cantlay vs McIlroy/Lowry A/S

Friday 26 September 2025 22:58 , Chris Wilson

Cantlay and Lowry take par, perhaps as expected. It’s up to Burns and McIlroy now, with the Briton going first from around 12 feet.

And he lands it! What a moment! That could be crucial in this game, with Burns only a few feet from the pin.

'What a year for Rose'

Friday 26 September 2025 22:56 , Jack Rathborn at Bethpage Black

“Rose drains the birdie putt!! Europe have another point, Rose points at Fleetwood, Fleetwood points at Rose. What a pair, they win two up. Rose embraced by his caddy Mark Fulcher, a vital point and now Europe are 5-2 up.

“What a year for Rose, once again a team player today, biding his time and holding his nerve in a crunch match. Donald and Bjorn, meanwhile, have jumped in a buggy to go watch the final match.”

Burns/Cantlay vs McIlroy/Lowry A/S

Friday 26 September 2025 22:52 , Chris Wilson

Burns gets into within eight feet off the tee, though Cantlay can’t match it despite finding the green.

Lowry goes a little closer than Cantlay, so what can McIlroy do?

It’s good, landing a few feet further than Burns’.

DeChambeau/Griffin vs Rose/Fleetwood 1UP

Friday 26 September 2025 22:50 , Chris Wilson

Two great approach shots from europe as Fleetwood gets within five feet from 111 yards out, before Rose lands a few feet further.

Griffin joins the European pair on the green, around four feet away, while DeChambeau is in the bunker.

'A massive response by McIlroy'

Friday 26 September 2025 22:47 , Chris Wilson

“Huge birdie putt by Cantlay on 16… and a massive response by McIlroy!

“They go to 17 still all square - this is an epic contest and feels like it will set the tone, and momentum, for Saturday’s play.”

Burns/Cantlay vs McIlroy/Lowry A/S

Friday 26 September 2025 22:47 , Chris Wilson

Nothing from Burns on this putt as he falls short, so again it’s in Cantlay’s hands for now.

He lines it up from about 20 yards and it’s a stunning effort, perfectly paced as it sinks in for a birdie!

Can Europe match it then?

Yes they can! McIlroy weighs it up and rolls it right to left to keep us level.

'Can Europe hold on?'

Friday 26 September 2025 22:44 , Jack Rathborn at Bethpage Black

“Fleetwood’s family are waiting for him by the 18th fairway, his step sons Oscar and Murray, both talented golfers, are practicing their follow throughs, and they look awfully like Fleetwood’s.

“DeChambeau has inspired a huge wave of US momentum down the last, can Europe hold on?”

DeChambeau/Griffin vs Rose/Fleetwood 1UP

Friday 26 September 2025 22:44 , Chris Wilson

DeChambeau is in the rough on 18, with the other three getting onto the fairway in what is a very tense ending to the second match!

Burns/Cantlay vs McIlroy/Lowry A/S

Friday 26 September 2025 22:43 , Chris Wilson

Shane Lowry hits a lovely approach shot pin high and lands within 10 feet. McIlroy could use his support right now.

Patrick Cantlay and Sam Burns reply by finding the green, though they’re roughly 20 feet away.

McIlroy is the last one up then, and he matches the effort of his partner to land roughly the same distance away on the other side!

'This could be key turning point'

Friday 26 September 2025 22:41 , Lawrence Ostlere at Bethpage Black

“McIlroy’s ball drops out of the sky and lands perhaps less than six feet from the hole on the 16th green, to near silence from the American fans huddled around the edge.

“Both European balls are inside the Americans, and this could be key turning point coming up now in this final match of the day…”

DeChambeau/Griffin vs Rose/Fleetwood 1UP

Friday 26 September 2025 22:36 , Chris Wilson

Griffin misses his chance to take it within one, so it’ll be DeChambeau to keep himself and his teammate in it going into the final hole.

He makes no mistake, sinking it from six feet to take us to the final hole!

DeChambeau/Griffin vs Rose/Fleetwood 2UP

Friday 26 September 2025 22:34 , Chris Wilson

Rose has a putt from feet for a birdie to win the match. He’s just off the green and chips on, but it doesn’t have the distance. Fleetwood will likely struggle from over 30 feet too, so this one might go within one again!

The Englishman steps up but it doesn't have the legs again.

Burns/Cantlay vs McIlroy/Lowry A/S

Friday 26 September 2025 22:31 , Chris Wilson

Another sigh of relief from Europe as Cantlay can’t sink his put, slipping under the hole.

Levle with three to go in this one!

DeChambeau/Griffin vs Rose/Fleetwood 2UP

Friday 26 September 2025 22:30 , Chris Wilson

Fleetwood and Rose land side of the pin with their tee shots but they’re 20+ feet away.

However, Griffin goes for the big one and his ball lands 18 feet from the pin, and DeChambeau follows that with a huge effort of his own, putting it within six feet!

The US can still draw this one, of course.

Burns/Cantlay vs McIlroy/Lowry A/S

Friday 26 September 2025 22:28 , Chris Wilson

McIlroy has the birdie putt attempt on 15 from about feet. He goes left to right and it looks good but it just didn’t have enough pace! The line was near-perfect.

Cantlay will have the chance to put his team ahead.

DeChambeau/Griffin vs Rose/Fleetwood 2UP

Friday 26 September 2025 22:25 , Jack Rathborn at Bethpage Black

“There’s a huge huddle around the 16th now with players, assistants, family and friends watching on, including Straka, Thomas, English, Young and Spaun.

“Fleetwood lines up a birdie putt, from 15 feet, it bends from right to left and IN! A kiss from Justin Rose for his troubles and Gianfranco Zola has just leaped up in delight in front of me.

“Bryson DeChambeau cannot reply, and Europe are two up! Two holes to play and this match is in the Europeans’ hands.”

DeChambeau/Griffin vs Rose/Fleetwood 1UP

Solid approach shots from all four players in this one, with each man between roughly 18 and 23 feet from the pin. Tense times!

Rose is up first and it's very close, with just a little too much pace on it.

Griffin goes next and also misses it! Over to Fleetwood and DeChambeau...

Burns/Cantlay vs McIlroy/Lowry A/S

Both Americans miss the fairway here, with Lowry up the middle and McIlroy in the rough.

Lowry goes to the right, though Cantlay takes a superb approach and Burns lands in the bunker.

McIlroy gives himself a birdie chance alongside Cantlay.

'This is tense'

Friday 26 September 2025 22:13 , Jack Rathborn at Bethpage Black

“This is tense, still just one up to Europe. But Bradley and Donald are sticking with DeChambeau/Griffin v Fleetwood/Rose, perhaps hinting at the magnitude of the match and the view that the outcome could flip the momentum and the entire outlook heading into Saturday.”

Scheffler/Spaun def Rahm/Straka 3&2

Friday 26 September 2025 22:13 , Chris Wilson

Rahm runs over with his birdie putt attempt, and Straka looks a little surprised.

Scheffler has a chance to keep the USA in it, though his birdie means that Europe will have the chance to take this match.

So, Straka to win it. It’s a lovely stroke from eight feet and it lands in the middle of the hole, securing Europe’s first point of the fourballs!

Burns/Cantlay vs McIlroy/Lowry A/S

Friday 26 September 2025 22:09 , Chris Wilson

Lowry goes a little long and wide, so Cantlay has the chance to turn it around.

Surely he can’t miss this with the form he’s been in over the last few holes?

But he can! Oh my word! It’s a yard out but he lips out and goes long!

A huge reprieve for McIlroy and Lowry as they stay level.

DeChambeau/Griffin vs Rose/Fleetwood 1UP

All down to Griffin on the 15th here as DeChambeau's ball rolls off the green.

Meanwhile, Rose has landed just 11 feet away, though he goes too far left with the putt.

Burns/Cantlay vs McIlroy/Lowry A/S

A superb approach from Cantlay gets him within four feet on the par-three 14th, and the US could find themselves ahead soon in this one!

Neither McIlroy or Lowry can match it, with the latter landing on the fringe. McIlroy is on the green, but one of them needs to find the putt to keep this level.

'DeChambeau has sparked a crowd'

Friday 26 September 2025 22:01 , Chris Wilson

“We’re still OK!” one American reassures his friends, but Rose’s approach is tasty and gives Europe a good look at birdie, while DeChambeau has sparked a crowd around his ball on the bank after missing the green right.”

'The course is electric'

Friday 26 September 2025 21:58 , Jack Rathborn at Bethpage Black

“This corner of the course is electric, with Scheffler and Rahm exchanging bombs on the 15th green up ahead, DeChambeau and Griffin bid to rebound after Fleetwood’s clutch putt to nudge Europe in front.

“There’s drama behind, too, as Cantlay makes another big putt to pull himself and Burns level with McIlroy and Lowry.”

Burns/Cantlay vs McIlroy/Lowry A/S

Friday 26 September 2025 21:58 , Chris Wilson

Cantlay puts the pressure on as he sinks the birdie from 12 feet, meaning McIlroy needs to hole to keep the lead.

He’s set up around six feet away and it’s so close but the Northern Irishman lips out and we go back to all square! It rolled almost all the way around and back towards him!

That brings huge cheers from the home crowd.

Huge putts in first match!

Friday 26 September 2025 21:52 , Chris Wilson

Scheffler/Spaun vs Rahm/Straka 3UP

Scottie Scheffler definitely thinks he has clawed back a hole here, but Rahm had other ideas.

The American announced himself with a superb putt from 20 feet, but his Spanish counterpart replied with an impressive effort of his own to halve the hole.

DeChambeau/Griffin vs Rose/Fleetwood 1UP!

Friday 26 September 2025 21:47 , Chris Wilson

Europe go one up for the first time in the second match!

DeChambeau is centimetres away from sinking a 40ft putt but he doesn’t make it.

That gives Fleetwood the chance to hole for the lead, and he makes no mistake!

Just the boost Europe needed after losing the third match.

Young/Thomas 6&5 vs Aberg/Hojgaard

Friday 26 September 2025 21:45 , Chris Wilson

This one has quickly unravelled for the European pair, and Team USA find themselves with two putts to win the match.

DeChambeau/Griffin vs Rose/Fleetwood A/S

A sublime shot off the tee from Fleetwood on 14, and he’s onto the fairway alongside his teammate.

DeChambeau gets onto the green, but he’s a lot further back than the European pair.

Griffin finds the bunker and there could be work to do for the US here.

Scheffler/Spaun vs Rahm/Straka 3UP

Straka finds the green with his second shot, but it rolls away from the pin a little.

Spaun replies with a better shot, landing on the green and staying put.

Up next, Rahm lands about 12 feet away as he continues a solid day, while Scheffler lands even closer as USA look to close the gap.

Burns/Cantlay vs McIlroy/Lowry 1UP

Friday 26 September 2025 21:38 , Chris Wilson

Cantlay is on his game in the final match so far. He plays two more superb shots on the 12th to set himself up with a chance at a birdie from five feet, and he sinks it to give the US the advantage on this hole.

McIlroy has the chance to respond but he misses the putt to take the game within one again.

'A clutch putt from Rose'

Friday 26 September 2025 21:35 , Lawrence Ostlere at Bethpage Black

DeChambeau/Griffin vs Rose/Fleetwood A/S

Friday 26 September 2025 21:34 , Chris Wilson

A solid putt from Rose leaves the second match level, with Griffin safely landing a putt from close range to keep it tied. Birdies from both there.

'They need a minor miracle, but they’re still alive'

Friday 26 September 2025 21:31 , By Jack Rathborn at Bethpage Black

“This beautiful par three with a severe runoff at the front of the green has seen Scheffler and Rahm drift left into the bunker. Spaun has a great chance for birdie… but Straka makes birdie!!

“A monster putt and the Austrian is pumped, Rahm is too, pounding his chest and then hooking his ball out of the bunker from up high with his wedge. Pressure on Spaun to avoid going four down with four to play… “No pressure JJ!” comes one cry from the crowd.

“And he makes it! Wild scenes of celebration from the American players’ families. Three down with four to play, they need a minor miracle, but they’re still alive.”

Scheffler/Spaun vs Rahm/Straka 3UP

Friday 26 September 2025 21:31 , Chris Wilson

Oh! A huge 30ft putt from Straka and could Europe be on the brink in this one?

Spaun had the best shot originally, landing his ball inside 10 feet, but the US will face a fight to get a birdie here.

Spaun steps up, and it's sunk to half the hole! Relief for the home crowd there.

Young/Thomas 5UP vs Aberg/Hojgaard

Friday 26 September 2025 21:25 , Chris Wilson

This one is almost done.

Aberg and Hojgaard can’t make the birdies so Young has a chance to all but wrap this up.

He lands it and the US are close to earning the first point of fourballs.

“Europe just sidestepped a moment of potential controversy on the 12th green. Fleetwood, with a birdie putt to win the hole, wanted Rose to putt first to give him a read, despite Rose being closer to the hole. Which is allowed.

“But DeChambeau didn’t like it, and came over to give Rose his putt. It was clever matchplay by Bryson. Rose still could have said he wanted to putt out, but was perhaps wary of riling the crowd and picked up his ball as DeChambeau requested.

“Fleetwood missed the putt and this crucial match remains all square.”

Burns/Cantlay vs McIlroy/Lowry 2UP

Friday 26 September 2025 21:20 , Chris Wilson

Advantage Europe again in this one courtesy of Shane Lowry!

It’s an easy one for the Irishman, who holes from three feet to take himself two up.

'Three down, with five to play'

Friday 26 September 2025 21:18 , Jack Rathborn at Bethpage Black

“Drama! A double collision with the pin as Spaun almost holes out his pitch, the Americans in the stand cannot believe it, then Scheffler chips up to within a few inches. It’s not enough to threaten the Europeans with Rahm so close for two. This eagle opportunity could all but end this match. 608 yards, in two shots…

“But the eagle try slips by, USA survive. Still three down, with five to play.”

Scheffler/Spaun vs Rahm/Straka 3UP

Friday 26 September 2025 21:17 , Chris Wilson

Scheffler gets some serious cheers as he sends his second shot on the 13th just short of the green! It’s a 600-yard hole!

Rahm won’t let him steal the spotlight though, lading his own approach within 12 feet!

Moments later, there’s almost a moment of madness as Spaun’s shot from 60 yards hits the pin but doesn’t land in!

Scheffler then chips in to within gimme distance, but Rahm has the chance to win the hole – he goes wide, and this one stays level too.

DeChambeau/Griffin vs Rose/Fleetwood A/S

Friday 26 September 2025 21:12 , Chris Wilson

Fleetwood makes the fairway off the tee on 12 before landing just off the green with his second shot.

Rose goes long with his effort, landing on the back edge of the green.Griffin goes with the 7-iron and makes the green, but that’s a difficult putt. His teammate replies with a similar shot that is no easier to putt.

No one can manage it anyway, and this one remains level through 12.

'What a player!'

Friday 26 September 2025 21:11 , Jack Rathborn at Bethpage Black

“What a player! Scottie’s approach to the par five 13th is just a shade off the front edge, a good shot for eagle, but then Rahm’s approach drops out the sky to 10 feet, it’s magical and silences the wild American cheers.

“Four up with five to play is a distinct possibility. U-S-A sounds around the green.”

Young/Thomas 4UP vs Aberg/Hojgaard

Friday 26 September 2025 21:04 , Chris Wilson

Very little changing in this one (for Europe) with Aberg missing a difficult birdie putt despite going pretty close.

Thomas has a chance to win the hole with a birdie from six feet, and he sinks it!

This one is almost wrapped up, you’d think.

Burns/Cantlay vs McIlroy/Lowry 1UP

Friday 26 September 2025 20:58 , Chris Wilson

The deficit has been cut in this one, as McIlroy can only secure par despite a solid chip from the rough.

Cantlay responds by sinking his left-to-right effort, and the home fans finally have something to cheer across the back nine.

DeChambeau 'quiet and focused'

Friday 26 September 2025 20:54 , Lawrence Ostlere at Bethpage Black

“DeChambeau just stalked to the 12th tee after watching Justin Rose draw this crucial match all square.

“No sign here of the Bryson who was feeding off the crowd, and off President Trump, on the first hole. He’s quiet and focused right now.”

DeChambeau/Griffin vs Rose/Fleetwood A/S

Friday 26 September 2025 20:53 , Chris Wilson

Potentiallty a huge moment here, as Europe move level in the second match!

Debutant Griffin misses from 13 feet, giving Fleetwood a chance to capitalise. He takes advantage too, sinking a birdie to draw level!

That could be a vital moment in the afternoon session.

'Is Scheffler droppable?'

Friday 26 September 2025 20:50 , Jack Rathborn at Bethpage Black

“This is now a major talking point for USA and Keegan Bradley, is Scheffler droppable? Three down to Rahm and Straka, does he remain out there Saturday morning as a last chance?

“Could Bradley afford for him to go 0-3 into that fourth session tomorrow afternoon? That hard conversation can wait, but the next seven, at most, holes could define Scheffler’s Ryder Cup.”

Ryder Cup Fourballs

Some updates from elsewhere...

Young/Thomas 3UP vs Aberg/Hojgaard

Cameron Young gives himself a chance of birdie with a lovely approach onto the green, though he’s a long way off with the putt.

Each player takes par, and the home team have a big lead in this one.

Burns/Cantlay vs McIlroy/Lowry 2UP

McIlroy is left with a putt from three feet for par on the ninth hole to tie.

The Northern Irishman sinks it, no problem. Himself and Lowry remain two up going into the back nine.

'Europe are on the brink here'

Friday 26 September 2025 20:45 , Jack Rathborn at Bethpage Black

“Started right, stayed right, Scheffler can’t believe it. A huge chance to apply pressure to Rahm. The 11th green is lively, but the Spaniard’s own birdie putt is delayed momentarily, sparking some heckling from the Americans.

“He steadies himself and then delivers a smooth stroke, it never leaves the middle of the cup, BIRDIE! Three up, and Europe are on the brink here, seven to play and Scheffler and Spaun desperately neee to find something.”

'This is turning into another humbling day at the Ryder Cup'

Friday 26 September 2025 20:43 , Lawrence Ostlere at Bethpage Black

“I am stationed on the 11th green as Scheffler, Spaun, Rahm and Straka stride down the fairway after their tee shots. It is incredibly difficult, historically, to turn around a two-shot deficit on the back nine in fourballs, and this feels like a crucial few holes where Europe can either shut the door or let the US back in and give them some momentum.

“Jon Rahm makes his putt! This is turning into another humbling day at the Ryder Cup for Scottie Scheffler. He trudges to the 12th tee looking beaten already.”

Scheffler/Spaun vs Rahm/Straka 3UP

Friday 26 September 2025 20:38 , Chris Wilson

Rahm has the best chance to win the 11th then.

He’s about 10 feet away, and he sinks it perfectly to move his pairing to three up!

Ryder Cup Fourballs

Friday 26 September 2025 20:36 , Chris Wilson

Fleetwood’s got the chance to win the 10th but it’s frill far away in the end. Rose will have a chance of his own to follow though.

This one is easier, from around 10 feet, but he drags it wide.

Back onto the 11th, and Scheffler has the first chance for the birdie, but he drags it wide too. Not a great putting show from the world number one so far.

Ryder Cup Fourballs

Friday 26 September 2025 20:33 , Chris Wilson

Jon Rahm has been one of Europe’s form players today and he dials in another lovely approach shot, landing just a few feet from the pin on the 11th.

Moments later, Scheffler almost announces himself by holing from 100 yards! His shot that lands before spinning back towards the pin. It rolls agonisingly close but ends up further away than Rahm’s effort.

Young/Thomas 3UP vs Åberg/Hojgaard

Friday 26 September 2025 20:29 , Chris Wilson

Hojgaard misses a difficult putt for birdie, and Aberg follows it up by missing from about 10 feet out.

There’s a big chance for Young to hole his putt from five feet, and he sinks it!

The US extend their advantage in this one, with Young the star again as they go three up.

Scheffler/Spaun vs Rahm/Straka 2UP

Friday 26 September 2025 20:22 , Chris Wilson

Scheffler has yet another birdie chance to win on the 10th, but he goes wide once more. Hasn’t been his day so far.

The US remain two down after 10 in the first fourballs game.

Burns/Cantlay vs McIlroy/Lowry 2UP

Friday 26 September 2025 20:20 , Chris Wilson

Burns lines up a birdie putt on eight but it’s nowhere near really.

It gives McIlroy a chance to chip in for a birdie but it’s a difficult shot to putt. He makes a good go of it but it slides wide.

Lowry follows with his own birdie attempt. There’s about 12 feet in it – he goes wide too.

All square on the eighth there then.

'Honours even with Europe two up'

Friday 26 September 2025 20:16 , Jack Rathborn at Bethpage Black

“The Spaniard’s strike isn’t clean, but it pitches just shy of the green and trickles inside Scheffler’s approach. Honours even currently with Europe two up.”

'The fans remain behind this duo'

Friday 26 September 2025 20:14 , Jack Rathborn at Bethpage Black

“A lean and a club waggle from Spaun, who hangs his approach out left on 10. The US Open champion and Scheffler are facing defeat entering the back nine, which would be a disaster for the world’s No1 player after this morning beating.

“The fans remain behind this duo, in a pivotal match for this session. The sky is bright blue now with temperatures rising and fans have been drinking for eight hours.

“Rahm is the target of a few comments as he prepares to hit his approach here.”

Young/Thomas 2UP vs Åberg/Hojgaard

Friday 26 September 2025 20:09 , Chris Wilson

Another hole tied between these pairs as Young sinks a simple putt to share the hole.

Onto the ninth in this one!

Burns/Cantlay vs McIlroy/Lowry 2UP

Friday 26 September 2025 20:07 , Chris Wilson

Oh, another superb putt from McIlroy and Europe go 2 up in this one too!

He sinks a birdie from 25 feet to put himself and Lowry in control for now.

Friday 26 September 2025 20:06 , Chris Wilson

Plenty to think about for this duo then!

Scheffler/Spaun vs Rahm/Straka 2UP

Friday 26 September 2025 20:02 , Chris Wilson

On the ninth, Scheffler misses another birdie putt and now Rahm and Straka can take real control.

The Spaniard has a chance from around 12 feet, but it goes agonisingly wide and the pairs settle for a half.

Europe are 2 up at the turn!

Young/Thomas 2up vs Åberg/Hojgaard (7)

Friday 26 September 2025 20:00 , Chris Wilson

The Scandinavian duo can't land two difficult birdies so the seventh hole is tied, with each player securing par.

The US duo maintain a nice lead in this one.

DeChambeau/Griffin 1UP vs Rose/Fleetwood

Friday 26 September 2025 19:56 , Chris Wilson

Oh, the pressure is clearly on here as Rose misses a simple putt!

He gets a let-off though as Fleetwood lands his own to tie the hole.

Donald Trump gives USA unlikely Ryder Cup edge to counter Europe’s fast start

Friday 26 September 2025 19:54 , Chris Wilson

Burns/Cantlay vs McIlroy/Lowry 1UP

Friday 26 September 2025 19:51 , Chris Wilson

McIlroy has the first chance to win the sixth hole in the last pair. He’s around seven feet away...and he sinks it!

Roars from himself and teammate Lowry as they go ahead for the first time in this match.

'Can Europe hold firm?'

Friday 26 September 2025 19:47 , Jack Rathborn at Bethpage

“The pockets of cheers are starting to pop up all over the course. It’s a blazing hot day at Bethpage, and Griffin’s monster putt might have triggered the biggest cheer of the day.

“There’s more red now than blue on the leaderboard, can Europe hold firm? There are hundreds already packed into the stands on 17 and 18, eagerly awaiting a close finish, while soaking in the action on the big screens.

“Groans from the fans as Griffin sends one into a pocket of fans on eight. That looked dangerous.”

Scheffler/Spaun vs Rahm/Straka 2UP

Friday 26 September 2025 19:44 , Chris Wilson

Europe are now two up in the first match!

Rahms lands his putt from 17 feet for a birdie, and Scheffler has a fairly easy chance from about 10 feet to answer, but he goes wide!

Griffin/DeChambeau 1UP v Fleetwood/Rose (6)

Friday 26 September 2025 19:42 , Chris Wilson

Griffin lands one of the best putts of the day so far, sinking it from 40 feet! Huge cheers from the home crowd!

However, Justin Rose answers that with the exact same thing! It’s a similar distance and the usually composed Englishman even lets out a roar of his own.

The US pair stay one ahead.

(Getty Images)

Young/Thomas 2UP v Aberg/Hojgaard (6)

Friday 26 September 2025 19:37 , Chris Wilson

Thomas looks livid as he goes wide on the sixth, giving Aberg a golden chance to reduce the deficit.

It’s a putt from around five feet – but he misses it! Huge cheers as the US pair stay 2 up.

Ryder Cup Fourballs

Friday 26 September 2025 19:34 , Chris Wilson

The first match is still going Europe’s way as each player lands par to tie the seventh.

It’s followed by a lovely tee shot on the eighth from Rahm to put himself within birdie position.

On five, Lowry falls short with his own birdie chance, and both pairs tie that hole too.

Burns/Cantlay vs McIlroy/Lowry A/S (4)

Friday 26 September 2025 19:30 , Will Castle

McIlroy has to go super creative to get onto the green, chipping into the rough before it bounces out and rolls into the green.

Good effort.

Scheffler/Spaun vs Rahm/Straka 1UP (7)

Friday 26 September 2025 19:28 , Will Castle

Scheffler gets it out of the bunker... and it just rolls past the hole. A super shot, and that’s a gimme, even if conceded.

Straka follows up by going down the hill and putts a good few yards beyond.

Now it’s Spaun with a chance to win it - difficult putt and it goes wide right.

Burns/Cantlay vs McIlroy/Lowry A/S (4)

Friday 26 September 2025 19:26 , Will Castle

Great shot from Burns from the centre of the fairway, landing it 12 feet short of the hole.

Can McIlroy follow suit? No, he can’t. As a fan shouts “fore right”, it lands in the rough.

Young/Thomas 2UP v Aberg/Hojgaard (5)

Friday 26 September 2025 19:24 , Will Castle

“Did you get dressed in the dark?” The volatile New York fans hitting the Europeans where it hurts... their fashion sense.

Wonder if that was programmed into the VR headsets.

Either way, two nice drives from Aberg and Hojgaard.

Scheffler/Spaun vs Rahm/Straka 1UP (6)

Friday 26 September 2025 19:23 , Will Castle

A huge break for Rahm, who pulls his drive towards greenery that looks shoulder-height. The ball goes into the danger-zone, but bounces back out into the rough.

Very fortunate.

Griffin/DeChambeau 1UP v Fleetwood/Rose (6)

Friday 26 September 2025 19:21 , Will Castle

Perfect drive, perfect pitch - but it’s a horror put from DeChambeau, who misses the hole entirely from six yards out!

Huge chance to extend their advantage.

Young/Thomas 2UP v Aberg/Hojgaard (5)

Friday 26 September 2025 19:20 , Will Castle

Two pulled putts from Aberg and Hojgaard gives the Americans a chance to go 2UP.

Thomas steps up... and holes it!

U-S-A chants are in full swing. After a disappointing morning, the Americans are in the mood.
