Ryder Cup 2020: Steve Stricker confirmed as US captain

Steve Stricker was forced to hold back tears in his press conference as the 51-year-old was confirmed as 2020 US Ryder Cup captain.

A three-time vice-captain, who served as Jim Furyk’s right-hand man at Le Golf National last September, Stricker is hoping to make amends when facing Padraig Harrington‘s Europe at Whistling Straits.

The announcement was widely expected with Stricker, who played in three Ryder Cups himself from 2008 to 2012, being a key member of the famed 11-man taskforce set up in 2014.

But Stricker still couldn’t help but let his emotions overflow as he spoke as captain for the first time.

“I’m an emotional guy,” said a choked-up Stricker.

“It is truly, truly a dream come true. It is an honour to represent the PGA, the competition itself, truly humbled by this opportunity because I’m very passionate about this competition.”

Famed as an easy-going character, he added: “Some people don’t think I’m very fiery about playing the game of golf but deep down I’m very competitive, we want to win this more than ever and I’m here to help in any way.

“Communication is my biggest thing, all the players that make the team need to know what to expect from me and what to expect from them.”

Stricker, who lives in Wisconsin himself, finished second at the US PGA Championship when held at the beefed-up links course on the banks of Lake Michigan and expects a strong show of support from the home crowd.

“I expect nothing different here for this Ryder Cup. They support their own so I am excited to be here.

“While we were disappointed with the result in Paris, I am confident the setback will fuel our preparations for what will take place at Whistling Straits.”
