Plane travel hack hailed ‘absolute genius’ but others say it’s ‘annoying’

A clever hack to watch films or shows on planes that don’t have TV screens has gone viral on TikTok.

However the little-known trick has divided opinion, with some describing it as “absolute genius” while others say it is “annoying” and would “drive them crazy”.

TikTok user Stephen Murphy (@murphyspcsc) uploaded a video of him trying the “life hack” while travelling from Scotland to Majorca recently. He was flying with Jet2, which like Ryanair, easyJet and more airlines, does not have built in onboard screens.

It has since racked up almost 1 million views, while hundreds of people have left comments on the video.

The nine-second clip shows Stephen setting his iPhone plug onto the tray attached to the seat in front of him, before slotting his iPhone in between the prongs.

He then presses ‘play’ on pre-downloaded TV show and is able to watch it with the iPhone screen at a perfect angle facing towards him.

The short video includes the text “thank me later”, which many people took to the comment section to do.

“Just in time for my flight this weekend, life saver,” one person wrote.

Another said: “This is simple and effective and I love it amazing.”

A third commented: “That's a great idea thanks.”

Many more praised it as “absolute genius” and “a very good idea”.

Others said: “Been doing this for years. Super useful if you don’t have one built in.”

But not everyone was happy, with others saying it would “annoy” them.

“It’s amazing but the 2 things being in the bottom of the screen would drive me crazy,” one user commented.

A second said: “Need the full screen showing, otherwise my OCD will have me going.”

Another added: “It’s in the screen. My ocd couldn’t”, with someone else agreeing “I second that”.

Someone else said: "The 2 pins will annoy me tho. Lol. My ocd kicking in."
