Ryanair strikes: everything you need to know from dates to compensation rights

Ryanair pilots are set to go on strike with walkouts planned in August and September.

The British Airline Pilots' Association (BALPA) is behind the industrial action, following a dispute with the airline over work and pay conditions.

As a result of the ongoing dispute the union held a strike ballot with its members, who voted in favour of industrial action.

Now BALPA has planned walkouts in late August and early September.

It's worth noting that not all Ryanair pilots will be involved in the strikes, just those who are members of BALPA.

So, what does it mean for passengers with flights booked? We take a look at everything you need to know from the strike dates to your compensation rights if your flights are disrupted.

What are the Ryanair strike dates?

The first walkouts are planned from 00:01 on Thursday 22nd August until 23:59 on Friday 23rd August.

The second walkouts are planned from 00:01 on Monday 2nd September until 23:59 on Wednesday 4th September.

Am I entitled to compensation?

If your flight is delayed as a result of the strikes, you may be entitled to compensation although this does depend of the length of the delays.

If your flight is delayed by more than two hours then the airline must provide you with some assistance such as a reasonable amount of food and drink (usually they offer vouchers), a form of communication like a phone call, accommodation if you're delayed overnight and transport to/from accommodation.

If your flight is delayed by more than three hours you are entitled to the same assistance that you would be for the delay of two hours - but you are also entitled to compensation.

For delays of more than three hours, you can claim up to €250 under EU law.

You can find out more in our guide to your rights when your flight is delayed or cancelled as a result of strike action.

It's also worth noting that if your flight is delayed or cancelled but you still want to fly, it's the airline's responsibility to get you to your destination.

Why are the Ryanair pilots striking?

Not all of Ryanair's pilots are striking - just those who are members of BALPA.

The union and airline are in dispute over a series of work conditions including pensions, loss of license insurance, maternity benefits, allowances and pay structure.

The union says that is has received no formal offer from the airline.

In response to the strike action, Ryanair argued that last year its UK pilots agreed to a 20 per cent salary increase, with Senior Captains earning up to £180,000 p.a which it claims is more than competitor airline pilots.
