Ryanair slammed for 'last chance' offer to fly home for Christmas despite travel bans

Ryanair has sparked outrage after would-be passengers were sent a "last chance" offer to fly home despite new coronavirus travel restrictions.

A promotional email shared on social media appears to show the budget airliner encouraging people to purchase a ticket to get home for Christmas.

The email tells passengers to "treat yo'elf" and fly home for Christmas as it claims lockdown has been lifted.

But confused customers have responded saying the email has already "badly aged" as it came after the UK government put a ban on international travel for Tier 4 areas.

That while more than 40 countries around the world have banned flights arriving from the UK to curtail the spread of a new strain of coronavirus first identified in Kent.

Nations including Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands and Belgium, as well Columbia and El Salvador, have all banned flights from Britain over the "out of control" mutated strain.

One passenger who received the email said:

One user also shared the picture of the email saying: "I just received this promotional email from Ryanair. What planet are they on?"

While one echoed this as they said: " @Ryanair screwing customers again. Just got this email. Lockdown lifted? Fell for this with a flight to Cyprus in April when they said the same thing and lost £135 and no response to my emails."

An Edinburgh passenger due for Poland asked for some clarity as the country plans to ban flights from the UK from midnight.

"Hello @Ryanair", the tweet reads. "Poland's halting flights from UK from midnight but I haven't got any cancellation email yet. Will I be given a chance to cancel or rebook my tomorrow morning flight from Edinburgh? Thank you!"

Ryanair said in a tweet on Sunday that all those whose flights got cancelled due to EU regulations would get a notification offering "practical alternatives".

The ban on flights from the UK vary and are short-term but the EU will meet on Monday to agree a more joined up approach.

They came after Prime Minister Boris Johnson effectively cancelled previously announced plans for Brits to gather in Christmas bubbles between December 23 and December 27. That will now only be possible on Christmas Day and for Tiers 1 to 3.

No Christmas bubbles will be allowed at all for millions in London and parts of the South East who were put under Tier 4 restrictions to tackle the new strain of the virus which is spreading rapidly in the areas.

The Mirror has contacted Ryanair for comment.
