Ryanair pilots in Ireland to strike for 48 hours over pay

Holidaymakers planning to travel around the August bank holiday weekend may be set for disruption as Ryanair pilots stage a 48-hour strike over pay.

The pilots, based in the Republic of Ireland, are to strike on August 22 and 23. The industrial action is set to come into effect at one minute past midnight on August 22 after mediated talks about the union's pay proposals failed to bring an agreement.

Ninety-four percent of Irish pilots who are members of the trade union Fórsa voted in favour of the industrial action after accusing Ryanair of stalling on talks.

The union said Ryanair pilots would notify the company of further strike days in due course.

Ryanair has called on pilots and the union to return to mediation with proposals that take falling airfares and company profits into consideration.

The airline's chief people officer Eddie Wilson said: "Ryanair pilots who are already among the best paid workers in Ireland are now threatening to disrupt the holiday travel plans of thousands of customers over the coming weeks."

A strike in 2018 by Ryanair staff saw more than 250 flights cancelled and widespread disruption. Around 35,000 passengers were affected.
