Ryanair pilots could go on strike during school summer holiday

Ryanair pilots could be set to strike in the middle of the school summer holidays.

The pilots are being asked by their union if they want to take industrial action due to a dispute over pay and conditions. Ryanair members of the British Airline Pilots' Association (BALPA) will be voting over the next few weeks. The ballot shuts on August 7.

If they vote to strike, then Ryanair pilots could down tools in August - during peak school summer holiday season, Mirror Online reports .

Ryanair's routes from Newcastle Airport include popular summer holiday destinations Lanzarote, Madrid, Malaga, Tenerife, Faro and Mallorca.

BALPA says there are issues over pensions, maternity leave and the airline's pay structure. The union says it has been unable to reach an agreement with Ryanair over any of the concerns they have flagged.

Brian Strutton, the union's General Secretary, said in a statement: "Our Ryanair reps have been trying to tackle some of the many issues that result from years of non-recognition of unions within Ryanair. But we have not been able to make any progress with Ryanair at all on any of our areas of concern.

"As usual with Ryanair, it’s their way or the highway, and we are not prepared to put up with that."

Mirror Online has contacted Ryanair for a response.
