Ryanair passengers' fury at water charges while trapped on 'hot' plane for 12 hours

Ryanair passengers have slammed the airline for charging them for food and water while stranded for 12 hours on a 'sweltering' flight.

Holidaymakers were trapped on board the Edinburgh-bound plane on the tarmac in Lanzarote for five hours.

And when the flight eventually took off, it was then diverted to Bordeaux as the crew had worked over their limit.

"Adverse weather" was blamed for the delay, reports the Daily Record.

To add insult to injury, furious passengers say they were made to cough up €3 for water and pay for food despite temperatures outside reaching 30C.

Free water was finally handed out nine hours later when a mum, who was travelling with her husband and young baby, fell ill.

The family disembarked the aircraft before being assessed by paramedics in a waiting ambulance.

The plane, which had been scheduled to depart from the Spanish island at 11.20am, landed 12 hours later in Edinburgh at 11.30pm on Friday night.

Passenger John Rafferty said: "The lady sitting next to us asked for water after we had been sitting on the plane in scorching heat for three hours. The stewardess said she wasn't authorised to give it out.

"A while later they started selling water and non-alcoholic drinks for €3. I had to pay €3 for water and €5.50 for a panini.

"It wasn't until we landed in Bordeaux nine hours later that we were offered free water.

"We understand that things sometimes happen but the way it was handled was so poorly."

Another passenger Julie McCann said: "We had asked for water but it was clear it was purchase only.

"A lot of people bought water, juice and food because we had been sitting for hours and were hungry and thirsty. I would have thought the airline would automatically provide water after three hours.

"I had to buy a panini for €5.50 and my husband was €10 for a meal deal including water.

"When we landed in France nine hours later, the pilot said they were going to try and get water and it was eventually handed out."

Ryanair said the reason for the delay in Spain was down to "adverse weather".

A Ryanair spokesman said: "This flight from Lanzarote to Edinburgh (27 Sept) was regrettably delayed ahead of take-off due to adverse weather in Lanzarote, before departing to Edinburgh later that day.

"Ryanair sincerely apologised to customers for this delay, which was completely outside of our control."
