Ryanair mocks British Airways for 'lost' Düsseldorf flight - but airline once sent a Liverpool flight to the wrong airport

Ryanair's attempt to mock British Airways following a flight that landed in Scotland not Germany backfired when users highlighted that the Irish carrier once did the exact same thing.

Due to a paperwork error, BA passengers were mistakenly flown to Edinburgh rather than Düsseldorf yesterday morning.

The pilot of Flight BA3271 took off from London City shortly after 7.30am on Monday and followed instructions to fly to the Scottish capital instead of the German city - despite being more than 500 miles apart.

Following the incident, Ryanair tweeted the UK based airline with a picture of Geography For Dummies, captioning the post: "Hey, we have a present for you."

BA replied: "Now, now. No one is perfect", signed off by a woman named Lolly.

Ryanair quipped back: "True, Lolly! Even we wouldn't flog Edinburgh as Germany #DusseldorfNorth."

However, eagle-eyed Twitter users reminded Ryanair of the time they once landed a flight from Liverpool at the wrong airport.

In 2006, a plane operated by Eirjet on behalf of Ryanair was scheduled to arrive at City of Derry Airport, but instead landed at an Army base six miles away by mistake.

Upon landing the pilot reportedly apologised, saying: "We may have arrived at the wrong airport".

Ryanair said in a statement it was due to an "error by the Eirjet pilot who mistakenly believed he was on a visual approach to City of Derry airport".

Users posted screenshots of the 2006 articles from different media sources, tagging Ryanair in their posts.

One wrote: "I assume you're lending them your copy..."

And another said: "Maybe keep the book", followed by side-eye emojis.

Passengers on yesterday's British Airways flight eventually made it to Dusseldorf, touching down more than three-and-a-half hours behind schedule.

German firm WDL Aviation operated the flight on behalf of BA CityFlyer, which is a subsidiary of British Airways.

An investigation has been launched by the firms to find out why the paperwork error occurred.

A British Airways spokesman said: "We are working with WDL Aviation, who operated this flight on behalf of British Airways, to establish why the incorrect flight plan was filed.

"We have apologised to customers for this interruption to their journey and will be contacting them all individually."

WDL Aviation said in a statement: "We are working closely with the authorities to investigate how the obviously unfortunate mix-up of flight schedules could occur.

"At no time has the safety of passengers been compromised.

"We flew the passengers on the flight with number BA3271 to Dusseldorf after the involuntary stopover in Edinburgh."
