Ryanair boss tells GMB viewers people will be going on holiday this summer

The boss of a major airline told Good Morning Britain viewers that "people are going on holidays again" this summer.

Chief executive Michael O'Leary said that Europe will catch up with the success of the coronavirus vaccine rollout in the UK.

He believes short-haul flights to tourist hotspots in Spain, Portugal, and Greece will be able to go ahead in time for the school holidays.

Speaking to hosts Susanna Reid and Ranvir Singh on Wednesday morning, Mr O'Leary said: "With the school holidays coming round in June, July, and August and a successful rollout of the vaccines led by the UK, Europe will catch up dramatically, I believe in the months of April and May, particularly the Johnson & Johnson vaccine rollouts."

He continued: "I think you're going to see the removal of all restrictions on short-haul flights between the UK and Spain, UK and Portugal, and the UK and Greece.

"Last week we announced 26 new routes that we launch at the end of May so we can bring people from the UK to places like Corfu, Santorini, Ibiza.

"The vaccines are coming, people are going on holidays again."

His predictions come as Health Secretary Matt Hancock sparked hope for Brits at the start of the week as he said “the door is not shut” on international travel this summer.

He said more evidence on how vaccines work against coronavirus variants will be known in the next few weeks.

Under current lockdown rules in the UK, Brits are banned from travel abroad for holidays.

The law says no-one may “leave England to travel to a destination outside the United Kingdom, or travel to, or be present at, an embarkation point for the purpose of travelling from there to a destination outside the United Kingdom” without a reasonable excuse.

Anyone who breaks such rules could face a £5,000 fine.

However according to the Government's roadmap out of lockdown, international travel bans could be lifted by May 17 - subject to a review by the Government's Global Travel Taskforce, which will share an update on April 12.

Portugal's tourism minister said the country will welcome back UK travellers from May 17, regardless of whether they have been vaccinated or not.

Meanwhile, Spain's tourism minister Maria Reyes Marato has said the country could bring in Covid-19 vaccine passports from as early as May to allow holidaymakers to travel.

Greece is aiming to reopen its borders from May 14 with the government assuring Brits that they can go ahead and book a Greek getaway for this year with confidence.

The country's tourism minister has said they are prioritising coronavirus vaccinations for the tourism sector, with small islands such as Halki near Rhodes, Kastellorizo, Meganisi and Kythira in line first.
