Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary pens open letter to Simon Harris urging him to remove 'pointless' travel quarantine

Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary has penned an open letter to the Minister for Health Simon Harris, urging him to remove the "pointless" quarantine imposed on visitors to Ireland.

The Mullingar man, who has been campaigning to have the travel restrictions lifted, issued the letter this afternoon after it was sent to the Minister.

Ryanair plans to begin a return to its normal schedule on July 1, and Mr O'Leary has previously called the Government's 14-day quarantine plans "political game-playing".

In the letter, he compares Ireland to the rest of Europe which is "opening up" to visitors, and said our quarantine is "ineffective, inaccurate and un-implementable".

He reiterates his call to the Government to "read the science" that recommends face coverings, rigorous hand washing and minimising physical contact.

And he goes on to say it is "deeply troubling" that Ireland has not made face masks mandatory on public transport but are imposing a quarantine on country to country travel.

He concludes: "Your Department should follow this science and mandate face masks, as well as bring forward your overly conservative and unreasonably stringent lockdown restrictions to all normal, everyday life to resume safely without any unnecessary or ineffective delays.

"A good starting point this weekend would be removing this pointless visitor quarantine, which all other EU countries, led by their scientists and medical experts, are abolishing."

The letter has also been circulated to Tony Holohan, Chief Medical Officer at the Department of Health, Public health expert Dr Gabriel Scally and Minister for Transport Shane Ross.
