Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary calls for widespread use of face masks and slams quarantine as 'ineffective game-playing'

Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary has called for widespread use of face masks and slammed quarantines as "political game-playing".

The airline chief criticised the decision by health officials that all passengers arriving here have to quarantine for 14 days on arrival.

From Thursday, passengers entering Ireland will have to provide details about where they will be staying.

Failure to fill in the form will be punishable by a fine of up to €2,500 or a term of imprisonment up to six months.

Mr O'Leary also called for the period between phases of easing restrictions to be shortened from three weeks to two.

Speaking on RTE's Morning Ireland on Wednesday, he said: "Ireland, like many other European countries is now emerging out of lockdown and we're emerging much slower and in a much more conservative manner than most other European countries.

"We can and should do more, it's time to get the economy moving."

He also described quarantine measures as "ineffective" and called on the Government to scrap them.

And he pointed out that people can cross the border from Northern Ireland into the Republic of Ireland without quarantining.

"The concept of quarantine is completely ineffective if you don't quarantine people at the airport. Once you allow them onto Dublin Bus, on you allow them onto taxis (sic), if you have a coronavirus positive person, then the infection spreads.

"A quarantine imposed only after you use public transport to get to your eventual destination is not a quarantine, it's simply political game-playing.

"It's quite clear, the scientific experts have allowed people to move again, all the Italian countries are lifting their travel restrictions, they're removing ineffective quarantines... at a time when Ireland is imposing an ineffective quarantine", he said.

Mr O'Leary reiterated his stance for widespread use of face masks instead and said this might allow premises like hairdressers to reopen earlier.

He said: "Ryanair will be flying from the first of July to countries all over Europe and we're requiring you to wear face masks."

Mr O'Leary said the quarantine has "no basis in science, no basis in health measures."

"The Government needs to explain why Ireland with one of the best records in tackling the Covid-19 virus, and they deserve great credit for that, now is imposing the most strict lockdown of any European country.

"We are being overly conservative, it is time to reward the Irish people with a relaxation of these measures."

"It is time we went back to work. The science supports the airlines going back flying, not even on the first of July,  going back flying mid-June."

Mr O'Leary also revealed it could take three to six months to refund all customers who had their flights cancelled due to the pandemic.

"We have a record backlog of refunds, we have about three months of flight cancellations imposed on us by Government", he said.
