Ryanair blocks refunds on Cyprus flights - despite island banning UK visitors

Low-cost airline Ryanair is refusing to refund passengers with flights booked to Cyprus - despite the island maintaining its ban on UK visitors.

The budget carrier is reportedly offering alternative travel dates only - with passengers being asked to pay as much as £95 to amend their booking.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office lifted "all but essential" travel restrictions to Cyprus last week, but the Mediterranean island still has a ban on visitors from the UK, and says anyone who has been in Britain in the past 14 days won't be allowed in.

Rules are due to be reviewed on August 1, depending on the number of coronavirus cases reported, reports MirrorOnline.

But customers have complained that the airline is only offering alternative travel dates to anyone affected and refusing refund requests, according to Which?.

The consumer group said customers are also being told to pay the administration charges and any difefrence in ticket price.

Ryanair typically charges between £50 and £95 to change flight reservations.

It is offering to waive the fees to new bookings made in July, August and now September but those who've already booked still have to pay up.

Cyprus has said it may review its ban on UK tourists on August 1, but currently, only citizens and their immediate family members can enter the country, as long as they test negative for coronavirus.

The budget airline isn't legally required to offer passengers refunds - passengers are only entitled to money back if Ryanair cancels the flight.

A customer who was due to fly from Liverpool to Paphos on July 8 was charged a £270 "change fee" even though the new flights, booked for May 2021, were £75 cheaper than the original booking.

Ryanair said that passengers should check government guidance before they travel.

"For non-cancelled flights, standard T&Cs apply," a spokesman said.

"Passengers who do not wish to travel on their booked flight can move it to another date, in which case, a flight change fee and the difference in fare may apply."

Under current terms and conditions, passengers won't be able to claim refunds for failed bookings through their debit or credit card provider under section 75 or chargeback.
