Ryan Tubridy's hilarious reaction to Jon Bon Jovi's claims that Bono had 'Orangemen going through his neighbourhood'

Ryan Tubridy is the latest to react to Jon Bon Jovi's claims that fellow rocker Bono had "Orangemen going through his neighbourhood."

The American singer caused a storm on Twitter during the week after he said that Bono lived in fear of being beaten up in sectarian attacks while appearing on actor Dax Shepard's podcast aptly titled 'Armchair Expert'.

Speaking on the podcast, he said: "So Bono's probably right at my age – he's a couple of months older I think.

"His upbringing was obviously very different from mine – I never had Orangemen going through my neighbourhood and saying 'Get the Catholic kid and beat him up.'"

He added that he "didn't experience that kind of turmoil in suburban New Jersey".

While Bono has been vocal about divisions in Northern Ireland, people were quick to point out that the claims were not exactly accurate.

Bono, real name Paul Hewson, in fact grew up in Finglas in Dublin to a Catholic father and a mother who was a member of the Church of Ireland.

And while the Orange Order marched in Dublin in 2006, which sparked widespread riots, the loyal order had previously not been seen parading in the capital since 1937.

Now Ryan Tubridy is the latest person to give his thoughts on the story, which has been a major talking point on social media.

Speaking on his RTE Radio One show, he chuckled and said: "I'm not sure if the Orangemen made their way down through Mount Temple secondary school and started beating up the kids.

"And if they did they picked the wrong kids."

However, he quickly defended the 80s rock star saying: "Anyway it's along story and no one should be beating anyone up but we should probably leave Bon Jovi alone.

"It was just a little slip of the cultural tongue as it were and we'll let him off today. But it was just a bit of nonsense I suppose."
