Ryan Tubridy most iconic RTE Late Late Show moments - from heartfelt reunions to awkward interviews

On Thursday, RTE announced that long-running Late Late Show host Ryan Tubridy would be stepping down from his role at the end of the season.

With the news that Tubs will no longer be hosting the show, the Irish Mirror took a look back at some of the most iconic moments from his tenure as host.

From hilarious moments of guests accidentally saying too much, to slightly more awkward moments when audience members become a lot more active in the show - here are some of the most iconic moments on The Late Late Show while Tubridy was the host.

Daniel O'Donnell is actually Mario Rosenstock, and the audience wasn’t happy

The recent Late Late Show Valentine’s Day special might have reminded viewers of an iconic moment that took place on a previous Valentine’s Day special when host Ryan Tubridy announced that Daniel O'Donnell would be coming on stage to croon to the audience.

One fan went from ecstatic to visibly annoyed when, rather than the beloved singer, out came comedian Mario Rosenstock. While the lady went viral for her less-than-happy reaction, it later earned her a chance to meet the star.

Paul Murphy interview gone wrong

Sometimes an interview can just go wrong.

Back in 2015, in the midst of the water charge protests that engulfed the country, People Before Profit–Solidarity TD Paul Murphy headed onto his couch to chat. However, many of his supporters afterwards expressed their distaste at Tubridy’s questioning.

The host introduced Murphy as follows: “He spent three years as a member of the European Parliament, he’s been a member of Dáil Éireann for just four months but in his campaigning history, he’s been arrested five times.”

He then proceeded to ask if he got a “thrill” from being arrested.

The following day, Mr Murphy posted on his Facebook page saying he felt “the whole interview was an exercise in badgering and trying to make me responsible for things that are nothing to do with me”.

RTE had no comment.

Francis Brennan teaches us how to put a duvet on a blanket, sort of

Sometimes things can go wrong, but when you have a guest that is full of laughs and on the couch to have some fun, everything works out.

Hotelier and TV show host Francis Brennan was left looking a bit foolish after he was unable to put a duvet on a blanket and needed an audience member to come up and help.

Brennan was asked to demonstrate how to cover a duvet, with host Tubridy providing him with both - however, the duvet was inside out and so disaster ensued which culminated in an audience member stepping in to help.

The hotelier was a good sport, later returning to the show to explain that the producers forgot to turn the duvet inside out.

'Bullying' accusations from former Boyzone star

Back in 2018, Tubridy came under fire for accusations of “bullying behaviour" made by former Boyzone star Shane Lynch.

Lynch was not happy when The Late Late Show broadcast an infamous clip of Boyzone dancing on the chat show back in 1993 when they were just starting out. However, Lynch later claimed to the Sun that RTÉ had promised: “they wouldn’t show that clip”.

While on the show Lynch gave his middle finger to the camera and swore on live TV. Tubridy later responded saying he was unaware Lynch felt so strongly about the clip.

A heartfelt toy show reunion

One of the most tear-inducing moments in the show was in 2017 when army dad Graham Burke was hidden inside a giant present and was revealed to his two children Adam and Kayla who had no idea he was hiding in the giant present.

The family were able to reunite in time for Christmas, with mam and their other sibling rushing on stage to embrace each other.
