Ryan Tubridy left moved by story of four 'special young ladies' who have raised over €1,200 for child cancer charity

RTE star Ryan Tubridy was left audibly moved this morning by the story of four “special young ladies” who have raised over €1,200 for a child cancer charity.

The Dubliner was clearly touched by the tale of Amelia, Tessa, Emma-Jane and Megan, four eight-year-olds who set out on a readathon to raise money for the Gavin Glynn Foundation.

It’s a charity that supports families dealing with childhood cancer – and on radio this morning, Tubs urged the public: “Remember that sentence – families dealing with childhood cancer.

“Think about that before you start giving out – and I say this to myself. This isn't pointy fingery.”

The listener who flagged the girls’ story with Tubridy, told the story of Amelia’s cousin, Sean, who died earlier this year from cancer aged just 13.

“My thoughts – I mean this – are with his family when I read this,” said Tubridy, who was left on the verge of tears by the account of the girls’ charity endeavours.

“I love these children already,” he added. “It is beautiful.

“When I read something like that, I think the future is safe when four young girls aged eight raise over €1,000 because they're thinking about their friends and their family through hard times.

“You just think, ‘this gives us hope’ – well done.”

All week, Tubridy has been hearing from members of the public as Ireland moves into Level Five – the harshest tier under Ireland’s Living with Covid plan.

And he’s already provoked a huge response with the announcement that the Late Late Show will run a special in the coming weeks that focuses on the efforts of small businesses amid the pandemic.

In just over two weeks, Tubridy’s iconic Friday-night telly show will speak to local businesses all around the country in an attempt to bring them to a wider audience and boost flagging sales.
