Ryan Tannehill trade wouldn’t make sense for Redskins

The Washington Redskins need help at quarterback — but acquiring Ryan Tannehill from the Miami Dolphins via trade would represent a rather large blunder.

For those out of the loop, the Dolphins have reportedly tried to shop Tannehill:

Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports the Dolphins have called teams such as the Redskins in an effort to unload Tannehill, too.

Bad idea.

It should say quite a bit about Tannehill that the Dolphins aren’t even interested in using him as a stopgap solution while a new head coach takes over.

The Redskins shouldn’t have an interest in such a move, either. Tannehill is a ridiculous $26.6 million cap hit in 2019, and while the money can change during a trade, other factors suggest he isn’t worth it.

Namely, Tannehill once again couldn’t stay healthy in 2018, missing five games. He missed three games the year prior, too. He’s now going on 31 years old in July and a career 62.8-percent passer.

The Redskins already tried to get another team’s former starter and make it work with Alex Smith. The bad injury there can’t be helped, but the team’s cap situation and long-term outlook suggest drafting a quarterback would be the better option at this stage.

While intriguing, Tannehill hasn’t shown enough to suggest he’d arrive in Washington and uplift the offense around him.
