Ryan Stevenson launches Hearts doubters defence but issues Robbie Neilson 'grumbles' warning

Ryan Stevenson insists Hearts fans are still right to have reservations about the side and Robbie Neilson despite their Premiership return positives.

The Jambos have secured two wins from two against Celtic and St Mirren as they head into the Premier Sports Cup last 16 clash on Sunday.

Despite room for optimism, former Tynecastle favourite Stevenson reckons fans are still right to point out flaws in the way Neilson's side play.

He admits he had major fears going into the clash in Paisley, but says the result is the main thing so far this season.

Writing in his Daily Record column, Stevenson said: "After opening the season with a superb win over Celtic, my fear was they would go out against St Mirren and undo all of that good work.

"I was convinced they would lose in Paisley the following day. I stared out of the window and conceded it would be the typical Hearts thing to do.

"Much to my delight they managed to win and I was happy to be proved wrong.

"Six wins on the trot and nothing but positives coming out of Gorgie – so despite the temptation, we mustn’t grumble.

"In football, the one and only barometer of how any side is doing comes down to results.

"I get that some fans aren’t happy with what they perceive to be a lack of flair, fair enough. It was the same last season but the Jambos won the Championship at a canter so it’s difficult to complain.

"I’ve been critical myself, I’ve had my say about the way they have been playing but when you sit down at the end of a season like the last campaign you can’t really say much.

"It’s better to hold your tongue as a title win was all that was required and it was a job well done. You may say it in a whisper that there were games they didn’t play all that well.

"When they opened with a win over Celtic, I thought Ange Postecoglou had his tactics right. His side played well.

"The difference was that when Hearts managed to get the ball into the opposition box from wide areas they were causing trouble. I only wish they would do more of that.

"Robbie Neilson deserves a lot of credit."
